A NetApp 4246 [6 Gb SAS] or a NetApp 4243 [3Gb SAS]. Used on fleabay. Can hold 24 drives, redundant PS, IOM etc. For cheaper than most consumer grade NAS units. Just add a SAS controller for 40 bux to your pc and run DrivePool or if you are a Linux fanboi run FreeNas. Or use MicroSloth Storage Spaces but I haven't tried it, too much negative vibes on Storage Spaces. But it does work with this type of enclosure.

At $17 a TB this doesn't seem to be a slick deal to me. Your mileage may vary.

the amazon reviews seem to point to SMR
I bought 2 this weekend and found IronWolf NAS drives inside. People have gotten BArracuda drives int he past but all the recent orders seem to be Ironwolfs. With regards to CMR or SMR... Seagate apparently doesn't make any SMR drives over 8 TB. So these 10 TB will be CMR.

You should get a consumer enclosure that supports Thunderbolt or USB 3.x.
Too complicated to get a SAS controller on a laptop. You will pay plenty for a fast one.

Watch out for the marketing numbers also.
I have a Thunderbolt case for 4 drives, it works, but guess what? NOT FAST.
It is like having a Corvette with a economy 4 banger in it.
Go to a store that sells them and ask for a demonstration of it with a laptop. See what you getting before you buy. You can always buy elsewhere if they have high prices.

Folks:

My drives are backordered.

For those who get them soon, could you share the model number showed by Crystal Disk?

Thanks!

I'm running an Unraid server and even when I plug in a drive via USB it'll tell me the model of the drive inside. I'll just Google whatever the model number is before shucking.

You can also pre-clear over usb just in case it has issues.

Not a fan of Seagate though. Lost more than one which is why i run a nas now.
