I have the older version of this and while the battery is not meant to be user serviceable, replacing it yourself is both easy and cheap. A new battery is about $15 on Amazon and replacing it just involves using a shim to pop the case open. ifixit.com has a guide.

Your advice is still good advice. I'm just saying it's not the end of the world if you do have to replace the battery.
This same unit was on SD a couple weeks ago for $108 shipped direct from FLIR. Received mine before Christmas, works great btw.
You can use the real deal ( Flir or Fluke) for free ( SF for me or check your Utilty Co. ) https//pge.myturn.com/library/ Free tool loan!

I must say I have gotten much use out of mine that I purchased years ago, great for finding areas of need of installation in your house. Amazing for science fair or school projects. One tip is to keep the battery changed once a month or so to keep the battery from fully discharging for a long period of time, the battery is not user serviceable and very expensive if not impossible to replace.

What, it doesn't draw power from the phone? Does it charge the phone?

Depends. If it's the type that are IR detectable, then yes. Some of them have managed to go stealth to IR.

IIRC from the last time this was on sale from FLIR - no. The Android unit won't work in iOS with a Micro USB -> Lightning adapter.

When I worked in manufacturing, my company would hire a vendor to fly a helicopter over our facilities and IR Scan our building's roofs. I suspect that you could do the same with this unit (minus the helicopter plus a ladder).

Bought the pro after Christmas for myself and it was neat but not $400 neat. This is a bit more tempting...

Most likely yes. I have used a Seek Thermal Compact for that exact purpose. It worked well.
