In the interest of not misleading anyone, I'm updating the title, product and the store. The original post is at the bottom. Note the first few comments were with regard to that model only.

There is now a newer model, available for pre-order on B&H for $900 (free shipping):

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/pr...9YQAvD_BwE

The newer one seems brighter (3200 vs 2200), has a low input lag of 5 ms, and high refresh rate of 240Hz (under 1080p) so it should be good for gamers. Now it is believed 701 has RGBW color wheel while the 728 has RGBRGB (so more accurate color but less bright).

This was my original post:

I wish I didn't get a used Epson (2150) just a couple of days ago. Even a decent entry level 4K projector new would still be worth the extra $400 I would have had to pay over an excellent 1080p one which 2150 is.

https://www.adorama.com/vspx7274k...=adl-gbase

At that price, it's obviously a pixel shifted 4K (or really UHD) projector. Have to make this disclaimer so people don't come in with their real 4k vs faux 4k and UHD vs 4K arguments ;-).

P.S.: this is currently on back order so don't buy it if your Super Bowl party depends on it ;-).

UPDATE: I now do not recommend this projector unless you get a price. Please see below discussions about the newer models.

This isnt that great a price for this. It's coming up on 3 years old now and is the original 4k pixel shift chips which have some issues like the light border.

It was $1499 MSRP and $1299 street price brand new back in mid 2018, so the "$1,849" list price is grossly inaccurate. There's been some very nice advancements since mid 2018 in the pixel shift 4k world so I would skip on this. To me this should be a budget projector at this point and be closer to $600-$700 for a "deal".

Seconded. Also, the likely reason on the drop is the CES-announced Viewsonic PX701-4K and PX748-4K models for only $900 and $1000 street price respectively. Although not announced, there is a 728-4K included in the manuals online.

There isn't a lot of details out yet on the spec/hw improvements but the price drop alone should give you pause unless its an urgently needed projector.

Personally just bit the bullet on a replacement bulb to hold me over until the aboves hit the market.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the info. Now I see the announcement:

https://newatlas.com/home-enterta...projector/

And PX701-4K can be pre-ordered on B&H for $900:

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/pr...9YQAvD_BwE

Now it makes me seriously think about selling my very good Epson 2150 and go for one of the two newer models.

By the way, here is a quote from the 1st link above:

The PX701-4K is built around the latest DLP XPR chipset from Texas Instruments, and rocks "true 4K" (3,840 x 2,160) resolution".

So the chip itself is UHD (instead of 1080p then pixel shifted to 4K)?

Great find. I was in market and looking for some other projectors. this popped up. This is going to be ground breaking 4k projector and pull all other projectors down to 500$ range. this projector will be on sale for 500$ in next thanksgiving deals. So 4k projectors will be available in 500$ range in next 6 months to 1years.

I suggest killing this post and making a new one with the updated information. The old product info is a bit confusing.

There's absolutely no way this will be $500 by Thanksgiving. It may drop $100 by then.

That's a good deal. I would keep it if

1) You don't notice any rainbow effect.

2) You are not into heavy (action) gaming with the projector.

3) You don't care about 3D.

About 3D, from Chinese's "Amazon" (jd.com), somewhere there is a * that indicates that 3D will be available for px701-4k via firmware update in March. But not sure how "official" that is.

Finally, there are quite a bit confusion with regard to the 3 new models: 701, 728, 748. It is believed 728 and 748 would be basically 727 and 747 with the new TI chip which has a higher refresh rate than the old .47 chip, respectively. 701 is believed is to be just px701-HD with the new chip.

So on Amazon, px701-4k is priced at $910, with an expected delivery date between Feb 11 - 28 for Prime members.

https://www.amazon.com/ViewSonic-...08L9SM2DK/

Their delivery dates and availability seem changing daily. I have to say I'm disappointed by how ViewSonic handles this, both the sales and the support as you can't even get simple and straight answers on say 3D availability and the color wheel type (I suspect 701 will have RGBCMY, 728 RGBRGB and 748 RGBW).

Thank you OP. I am looking forward to buy this PX701. Hopefully the 3D feature will arrive by the firmware update. I do not need the projector until May though. How can we ensure that 3D feature will be there? If it is there, will it be Active or Passive? Do you think the viewsonic sales team will provide this info?

This is from Amazon's Q&A session on px701-4k:

"Im looking to buy a couple pairs of 3d glasses for this projector but im not sure which ones to get. Does anyone know?
Answer:The PX701-4K projector can be used with any Active 3D DLP projector glasses.
By ViewSonic Corporation MANUFACTURER on December 11, 2020
I've been told by the manufacturer that the PX701-4k will not have 3D but that the 728 and 748 will.
By Bearclaw on January 14, 2021"

So the conflicting information abound. I got my information from the Chinese website jd.com where px701-4k has been on sale for about 2 months now (roughly around $860):

https://item.jd.com/100015660576.html

Perhaps you can try google-translate. They have a lot of reviews, just like Amazon. Mostly good. But most don't have other 4k projectors to compare against and are easily wowed by their first 4k projector. One reviewer did say he compared 701 with both 727 and 747 before deciding on 701.

In any case, I have a feeling/hope that the US shipment probably will have the 3D firmware in them.

Just ordered one from Amazon last night. Scheduled delivery tomorrow. They are releasing couple at a time with delivery in couple of days.
