I would try to get another $80 to get the following laptop (ryzen 5 3500u cpu passmark of 7180), IPS screen, and a more respectable brand. The EVO i7 cpu only has a passmark of 3500... https://www.walmart.com/ip/Lenovo...gn_id=9383
Would make a great starter laptop - sure it's an old i7, but for $300 new with a 256GB SSD and 1080p display, you'd be hard pressed to find a better laptop for $300 new.
Yup, don't let them i7 fool you, this is much slower than a bottom of the line Intel Core i3-1005G1 from 2019. And only half as fast(in terms of synthetic benchmarks) as a Ryzen 3500u.
If it was a touchscreen and you were buying it for a kid, then this would be a pretty good deal. As it is, you can find a current gen i3 15.6" 1080p laptop with 8gb of ram and 256gb ssd, and made by a name brand company, for the same price. And that laptop will last far longer and have significantly better battery life. But this is a fine deal if you need a laptop right this moment. But honestly I would go with something different if possible. This is a 6th gen i7. It will be fast enough, but there are other refinements with the newer generations of intel processors than just raw computing power....
Can you link me a current gen i3 or Ryzen for $300? Not being argumentative, I'm just looking for a deal.

I bought one evo cheap laptop before, very poor quality. One of the key on the keyboard doesn't response very well, have to hit harder to register, I keep trying to justify it with cheap price... then after I used it a few more days, it wouldn't turn on, just the logo and froze. Just not worth the trouble. I can see that this so call i7 CPU is also very old, passmark of only 3500... it is really not a deal at all! Don't be fool by the word i7, some new i3 is faster than this junk.

Not available at the moment but it was at that price at 3 different times based on previous deals. You won't be missing too much if you get this EVOO laptop deal though. Always the chance that the Lenovo laptop deal could come back though

I have a couple EVOO laptops, including the one I'm typing this on that is my daily driver for work and personal and had held up great for a year, better than laptops 2x the price. My 4 year old also has a cheap one similar to this one in appearance but more in the netbook range and it has been reliable as well even for a 4 yr old.
I say that to show I don't have concerns about the brand, and I am sure the performance is more than adequate for a laptop in this price range, enough so that I would consider it for my wife except for one issue. Because the processor is old (came out 5 years ago), the chipset is old, and thus there is the chance that Microsoft drops support for it in a year or two and leave you with a laptop that can't get updates within 18 months after that. A lot of that depends on driver support as well and intel doesn't have a great track record of keeping drivers current on older hardware.
If you are fine with maybe only getting 3 years out of it, this is likely a great deal for a middle of the road budget laptop. I'm not sure if the memory and hard drive are upgradeable but have seen some reports they are so that would help.

In my experience, windows 10 support doesn't seem to be a problem for older cpus. I set up an i5-3450 for my dad and windows updates (apparently) normally. I run an i7-4700k and have no problems with updates either. How can one know for sure what CPUs might be a problem?

Thank you both and I get that this i7 is way old, but I think that you're kind of illustrating that it's not that easy to clearly beat this deal today.
There's a Lenovo for 25% more and a comp from Black Friday. Both of which with much faster CPUs and much (in one case much much) better integrated graphics.
