So I'm a dermatologist and I'll tel you that differin (adapalene) over the counter is a great product. It won't do wonder for your scars. At best they may soften over time but unlikely to be dramatic. You need serious tx with a dermatologist for that (ablative laser, peels, subcision..etc not a one size fits all so you need to be evaluated by a professional). It will definitely help with hyperpigmentation but that's also a big challenge for a lot of folks so I suggest seeing a dermatologist to get something tailored to you. Preventing the hyperpigmentation should really be your goal(tx the underlying disease). Sunscreen should also be your best friend, otherwise it can take over a year to go away.
I highly recommend anybody except pregnant ladies use an over the counter adapelene. Differin is the most tried and true brand I know and love. Use it for the rest of your life and ditch all those other nonsense expensive retinol products, this stuffs way stronger.

Would you say it would be cheaper to get it over the counter or get a different retinoid prescribed with insurance?

How about epiduo
Going to give this a shot for my Sebaceous hyperplasia,
Whenever possible get prescribed since should be cheaper but most insurance won't cover OTC products. There are prescription equivalents though and even stronger ones. Should be prescribed by a BC/BE derm.
