Can you use these with long facial hair? I am talking like 3 weeks worth? Or do you already have to be pretty trimmed?

How often do you have to sharpen them?
Long hair is usually a problem for electric shavers, and it took my old arc3 a long time to clear off a weeks worth. The arc5 may be better, but likely will still take a while to trim it all down.

AFAIK, there is no sharpening. You replace the inner blades and the foil/blades every so often. Mine lasted around a year or so with moderate usage. I'd expect the same for the arc5 (which is why it's almost as cheap to get a new one on sale, vs just the blade/foil replacement for ~$80)

Good to know. How close of a shave are these? I prefer more of a 5 o'clock shadow versus baby face.

Anyone own this? I bought a Norelco for around the same price last year, it's good but doesn't shave as close as I want it to/pinches my hair a lot too. Wondering if this was worth the upgrade...

This is a very subjective matter as in to each their own. However, I bought this around BF to replace my old Arc4. It does a closer/smoother shave than Arc4. Never had any hair pinch.

what would be a best starting razor for teen who is just growing beard?
Mach 3 razor. Wirecutter has it their best budget manual razor. https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutte...ual-razor/

I went from shaving with a double edged razor for over a decade to the mach 3 recently and it's been fine so far. I use the cheap Barbasol cream you can buy at Walmart and haven't had any major razor burns or in-grown hairs as far as I can tell. (Although I do put lotion/vaseline on my face after.) And a double edged razor can cut your face something fierce if you aren't paying attention, it's why I switched. I've put on some scars over the years.

A shaver is a very personal thing, so people have their preference. In my experience, as far as closeness goes, Panasonics (foil) generally do a better job than Norelcos (rotary).

Seems like everyone is going from the multi blade razors to wet shaving with a double edge. Surprised to hear you went the opposite direction

I have a very thick beard and I am using a panasonic for more than 8 years now. Even the battery is knock on wood condition. Still cuts perfectly and does its job. I am wiling to buy a new one because I would like to use the new specs especially for a closer cut.

How does this compare to the Braun that was on sale at Costco for the same price?

My dad wanted an electric shaver, but the braun isn't going to work for him. Maybe no electric razor will, but does this give a closer shave?

For these considering I have this one and the Phillips one blade - which is cheaper - and the Phillips is my go to every time. The Panasonic took my skin a few shaves to get used - but it does get better like they say. Overall i prefer the short stubs from a style perspective.
