I got the similar AG400 from Amazon in a SD last September for $160. Didn't include the free bonuses, but it does have a temperature probe that this one doesn't, that we find very useful when grilling meat. You could always use a third party thermometer, although obviously it won't shut off automatically. We use ours a lot, for grilling and air frying (haven't tried the other modes).

One criticism I have of it is that contrary to the standard Ninja air fryers (which we also have), it has a preheat cycle, which AFAICT can't be disabled, and the preheat seems to take the same amount of time (several minutes) whether the grill is hot or cold (presumably because it has no way to measure the temperature of the grilling tray, so it always assumes that the tray is cold). The preheat makes sense when using the tray, which is heavy, but when air frying, not so much.

I have the same model and have noticed that the preheat on the grill preset is long but on the other presets like airfry, roast, bake etc are much shorter. Like you said, I guess they assume the time it would take to bring the grill plate up to temperature for the grill cycle but for the others the heating is quick as it is much smaller than a regular over. Also want to mention that the dehydrate feature is amazing if you want to dehydrate food.

Yes, but why does the air fry mode need a preheat? My regular Ninja Foodi air fryer works fine with no preheat at all.

That is true. The volume is so much smaller and the element so near the food that my guess is it would not matter, unless they are trying to heat up the pan or something. Would think that their testing may have shown some need to heat up, else they would not have built in the functionality as it reduces the usefulness marginally.
