EDIT: They came back stating that they cannot remove the lock because it's not showing up in their tools. If you want your phone unlocked, do NOT plug your T-Mobile Sim into the device.
Or do other employees have access to one?
In the regular cages.
Yes, they're lying. The first guy I encountered tried to tell me they were sold out. Girl came in behind him and advised that they had 6. POS.

XS MAX IS UNLOCKED.
XS is FLEX RESELLER LOCKED.
Why?
-XS MAX didn't ask any sim to be inserted to activate. where xs needs sim, it will not work as wifi device without sim. my friend tried with tmobiel which was scanned as sprint at walmart and it locked to tmobile. i tried different sim in that phone and it doesn't work.
- i tried unlocking with att as non customer without even booting the phone and got approval in a minute but for XS, got IMEI mismatch. so my guess is xs max was unlocked out of box. to be on safe side, i inserted cricket sim in xs max and it was fine. then i checked with verizon and then with tmobile. all worked fine.
-later i checked online report and it shows unlocked.
one other person posted his xs max was unlocked which makes me believe xs max comes unlocked through walmart. well, atleast for this deal.

I tried to use the AT&T portal (https://www.att.com/deviceunlock) to have it UNLOCKED.
I got an email and was APPROVED in minutes.
Email Title: "We approved your unlock request"
Thank you OP and "quantecipher".

I have 3 XS Max's on reserve. What is the downside of going ahead and activating them if it saves hassle? I figure I can always get a decent trade in on the XS's in a few months.
Of course, outright purchase would be preferable so I have more options. But what do you guys think? It seems to be a hassle dealing with the warp thing.
Upgrade Fee $30 (added on next bill)
$149.99 device cost when upgraded on DIP (it's reduces by $50 on WARP).
Final rundown:
$99.99 down (+sales tax)
$49.99 over 24 months (about $2 per month, and/or you can payoff early)
—————-
$185~$188 (final out of pocket, includes $30 activation, $5-8 sales tax).
Most people here are flipping it, but in your case (as I understand) you are OK on upgrading to a 2 year old flagship phone and paying $180 for something that was priced at $1350 (256gb version). So overall a good deal for you. Now make it extra sweet by requesting your carrier in giving you the credit for $30x3 upgrade. Early payoff the DIP (device install plan) and request unlock. Enjoy!
