You can DIY a screen pretty easily in a variety of ways. Spandex gives you an acoustically transparent screen and is good enough for 4k. Painting a 5x10 sheet of laminate with a sprayer or a 1/4' nap roller will give you a screen size up to 120". Or just sand your wall as smooth as you can and paint that. Search the web and you'll find countless threads of people trying various paint colors and types to get a super high gain screen or even ALR (ambient light rejection) screens and everything in-between.

I just built a white milliskin over black milliskin acoustically transparent screen @115" for about $135 including wood, brackets, a kreg jig, and fabric. It is paired right now with a 4k BenQ HT3550 and is unbelievably crisp. 4k is made for screens this size and it's amazing. None of my other listed methods should cost more than $150.

You can project on a wall. My wall is a bit textured and tan and picture still looks great. Not sure what we will do about a screen.

I also got in on this in July. Thought it would be fun for the kids during the pandemic. We use it for backyard movie nights. Top quality refurb item from Epson. And a 2-year warranty to boot as mentioned. Item arrived in a brown box and not retail packaging. It looked brand new and mine actually had 0 hours on it (you can check in settings), so it very well could have been brand new. Epson replacement bulbs are reasonably priced compared to other brands. We're actually using a Harbor Freight painter's drop cloth for a screen. I let it soak in a bleach solution for a couple of nights to make it whiter. It works surprisingly well. I do plan to upgrade at some point - need something bigger!!

Given the price point, I imagine screens on Amazon (such as this one [amazon.com]) are inferior to your solution, but just how much more inferior? I got in on the BenQ TK800M deal (4K) and am projecting to a textured white wall, and I must say it looks quite good having never had a projector before. Is it worth dropping $30 on one of these screens, or is there a minimum price point below which there's no perceptible improvement?

$550 with tax more is a burden to some people, especially when they don't have 4K content to play. Some people still only have DVD players (or some don't know they have blu-ray LOL. My friend who didn't know his PS3 and PS4 could play blu-ray bought a blu-ray player)

And a few years later when 4K is more popular, $500 for 4K projector might be the norm.

Same here generic brown packaging and 0 hours. The white plastic on the projector showed no swirls or scratches at all. The onboard speakers suck and are very weak. No Bluetooth so I use a Sony XB60 wired with a 3.5 to RCA cable. 3.5mm goes into the projector and the RCA plugs into my XB60.

I use New Google chromecast with the projector... Chromecast has in-built Bluetooth transmitter (which i didnt know of initially)... Now chrome cast is connected to my Bluetooth soundbar... and Chromecast volume buttons work on it :-)

The 2250 is the latest version of the 2150 which is just like the 2100 but includes miracast (a screen mirroring system). The 2250 also utilizes a new Android-based user interface, making it a "smart" projector that allows you to install apps like Hulu, Netflix, etc. I believe there were also incremental changes in some areas of performance such as brightness and contrast. I'm not an expert on this stuff, but you can read more about it here:

I don't have this particular model but i have a 3700 and a 5450.
I removed the tv and have been using a projector for 17 years. Started with a sanyo plv-z1, then a panasonic ux200 then the 3700 that i got refurb from epson.
It does 3d too but i rarely watch 3d movies and you will need active glasses for each person.
SD or HD is sufficient on a 100 inch diagonal screen. Unless you want to be able to read the small names in the credits, no need for 4k and 4 k content is less common.
A pull down screen (e.g. DaLite) is a must for a projector
A decent sound system will also improve the enjoyment. even just dolby pro logic (left right center back) even just left right (phantom center) and back.
A projector does not have a tuner, so don't expect to leave it on all day on the food network. it would also be a bad idea for the bulb that have a life span rated at 2 to 4 thousand hours.
It was part of my goal: make it difficult to watch randomly so the kids don't just turn on tv and look for something to watch but decide what to watch before sitting down. With netflix and binge watching it's not so much a deterrent anymore though.

So i would say a very decent projector for $400 sounds like a good proposition for me especially these days with the theaters closed. Try to see how many movies you need to watch on a projector vs at the movies to break even.
