Microsoft has recently announced that the price of Xbox Live Gold is going up. The $60 1 year membership will now be $60 for a 6 month membership. If you are subscribed at the current rate they will honor a renew at your old price.
Retailers are now carrying the new $60 6 month cards. You can get ahead by stocking up on the old cards at their original price points being the price hike. This will make the gamepass trick more expensive too at the new price points, so now is the time.
I've provided a few good prices below. Take advantage while you can.
Costco: 2 years for $95.00

Target: 1 year for $59.99

I bought xbox series x and enrolled for $1 for 3 months GPU offer from holiday season. That should run out in March.

What is my best option to enroll in 3 year GPU at lowest price? Possible? How?
Less than 3 years fine too. Possible? How?
Someone replied with what I could have done earlier but I need to know what should do now to get best out of current situation.
I have never had game pass or gold before enrolling for $1 for 3 months of GPU offer during holiday season. That's my current situation.
I also play a small number of games a lot in one year, but I like that I can try out new stuff, or throw on a party game if I have guests, or hit up a nostalgia classic with my siblings one weekend. I used to buy 5-10 games a year and not even play some of them. Now I don't. I am definitively paying less because of this service.
For Live Gold though you are really paying for online gaming service which has been free on the PC. Maybe the 2 free games per month but honestly aren't going to get AAA titles and if you do is rare.
I think this increase in general will hurt the general gamer community who is not interested in GPU.
This is coming from an original XBL Beta member whose had has every single Xbox to date.
With this move they are trying to increase the value of the GPU sub and/or the All Access plans.
Make them look like a great value (which at least GPU is IMO) so that it pushes those on the borderline over to subbing.
Other reasoning for this is to stop the back door of getting GPU for 3 years for cheap.
Now the conversion won't benefit gamers as much. I read rumors of the 1:1 conversion still working for expired GPUs.
With this essentially would make the Gold-GPU conversion $361 or $375 (for those who already used $ offer?)

But now that you have GPU the best might be:
1-(unconfirmed) Buy 3 years worth of XBL Gold cards for around $150 while you can and hold onto them. Let your GPU expire. Then use 3 years Gold cards. Then convert to GPU for additional $15. This makes a few assumptions. A. That the 3 years worth of Gold will indeed redeem as 3 years in March timeframe. B. That the $15 conversion for expired GPU from Gold back to GPU will convert at 1:1 ratio still.
2. Buy 1 year sub of EA Play for $24-30/year. Each 1 year EA play converts to 4 months of GPU.
These are your two options at this point.
My Newegg total was $179.97 and for Costco it was $163 and change due to tax. My first order for a 2 year card on Costco was declined for unknown reasons and then every subsequent order was also declined, stating that I went over the purchase limit, so they clearly counted the first order even though it was cancelled.
Costco also sells the 12 month card for $55 in addition to the 24 month, but I'm not sure if you can only purchase one or the other due to the one per customer limit as I was not able to get either of them to work no matter what I tried. My gold is up in March so I just hope they keep the $1 conversion trick around a bit longer so I can lock in the 3 years as I've never upgraded before.
Does anyone know if it's exactly a 36 month limit or do they let you go over by a month or two?

Never knew such conversion trick existed before seeing hike related post. Well.

I feel like there is a good chance of it working. Because when you buy the Gold card the number of months is written on it. If it doesn't redeem for it and MS won't honor it, MS has lawsuits waiting to happen.
Two in the hike announcements it stated gold will convert to GPU at 1:1 ratio.

However, I guess caveat is, is this only for first time GPU users?
Even if you have bought digital games it is not the end of the world. You can have multiple profiles on a single Xbox. And if you have games on your original defunct profile, it will work on any profile as long as the Xbox is set as home on the defunct account.
I guess you really have 3 options at this point. Option 3 is probably the best then
