For most people these Elgato capture devices are way overpriced.

Just buy some generic crap at Amazon like this one I own: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08JBZVQCV

1080p60 is fine for 99% of folks there in streamland. Plug-n-play, Mac, PC and Android phones.

Just to give fair warning for Nikon users.... this is a garbage solution. It's free, but its garbage. Nikon software only outputs at 1024 x 768 pixels (XGA).

Nikon and canon both have webcam utility tools so just go to their site, make sure your camera is compatible and download the software. you will need a usb cable and dummy battery. Also make sure your camera has a clean hdmi output and you should be fine.

I have one of these and it's rock solid. I have a Fuji camera but the webcam software doesn't support my model so I have to use this. Make sure your camera has clean hdmi output if you want to use this.

Thanks for repeating what I said... for most people its fine. If someone is streaming gameplay and they want their face in a 300px box, why are you or anyone here going to recommend a 4k or $100 dollar capture device?
Just making sure that people know specs might not be as advertised.

People also do full screen makeup streams, lectures, musical performance, etc and may want better capture and recording for archive purposes. Also some cameras internal video recording is only 4:2:0 and the elgato can do 4:2:2 uncompressed at 1080 allowing your PC to encode at higher quality than in-camera for recorded videos.

comparing to other Elgato devices, this supports 4k output

but people who do NOT need this :
a. those who have the SRL cameras(posted by someone above), which have the software and work as a webcam without this device
b. ppl who want to use some other camera device as a webcam during online meetings, you can just get those $10-20 USB 1080P adapter at amazon, because all video conferences(zoom, bluejeans etc) only can go up to 1080p max, no point to use 4K

people who may need this:
has a camera that does not have native support as a webcam,
want to record video in 4K not for web conferences

While CamLink is the official product, there are tons of no name copycats for $20-$30 each on Amazon and they work great, I know I bought one.

Keep in mind, even though many cameras now have software to convert them into a webcam, the output resolution tends to be limited. For example I have a Powershot Gx7 MkIII that got access to the webcam utility a few months ago, but the webcam output resolution is limited to around 720p or possibly even lower which kind of defeats the purpose of having a 4k capable video camera depending on your use case.

I use a capture card instead, and the difference is night and day. I also like the elgatos compared to the cheap Chinese stuff because the colors tend to be more accurate and it will have a lower chance of stuttering, especially at 4k. If you're using a laptop instead of a direct recording device for semi/professional/enthusiast level video capture then you probably want something you can rely on like an Elgato product.

If anyone is thinking of using this to record their Windows screen, I recently discovered if this press Windows+G it opens the Xbox recording, and you can record the screen unlimited... I know not the same thing as elgato but just a tip is you need to do screen recording.
Win+G also records system sounds —- like Netflix etc...

What's the the likely source of 4k video that people want to record? I assume video conference only need 1080p so no need to record in 4k device.

May be external 4k Bluray video that connect using hdmi to computer? what else?

Another question is if willing to spend at most $300, what's the best capturing device right now?

You could literally look at the specs between the two to understand the differences.
I know how to read.. what I was trying to uncover was if there was something outside of specs (like software compatibility, integrations, etc.) for a reason to go with one product. They seem to do the same thing so was just wanting to take other things into account.

Absolutely no one cares watching your stream of those differences. You know this. I know this. The impact is none existent to the end viewer.
A comparison of the Elgato versus the $20 generic capture device. Spoiler alert: the generic holds up pretty well.
