For most people these Elgato capture devices are way overpriced.

Just buy some generic crap at Amazon like this one I own: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08JBZVQCV

1080p60 is fine for 99% of folks there in streamland. Plug-n-play, Mac, PC and Android phones.

Just to give fair warning for Nikon users.... this is a garbage solution. It's free, but its garbage. Nikon software only outputs at 1024 x 768 pixels (XGA).

Nikon and canon both have webcam utility tools so just go to their site, make sure your camera is compatible and download the software. you will need a usb cable and dummy battery. Also make sure your camera has a clean hdmi output and you should be fine.

If you are a streamer stay away from this, its a nightmare to deal with.

Constant disconnecting and reconnecting. issues getting it to be recognized in windows ect.

but once it works it does a wonderful job quality wise.

I ended up buying a cheap $16 usb video capture card from amaozn and it works perfectly and doesn't let me down, its legit plug and play.

My understanding is that Canon offers free software for their DSLRs so that you don't need a hardware device like this to use your dslr as a webcam (eg for videoconf). I don't know if it has same bells and whistles and/or quality, tho.

I've got a Nikon, though, so have been eyeing this (for other needs, too) so I just may bite!

Thanks for posting!
The Canon EOS Webcam Utility does only up to 576p at 30fps. I use a cheapo HDMI to USB capture device in order to get 1080p.

can i plug this into my android tablet via OTG cable?
if so, what app to view?
There is no support for android. The app runs on Windows 10 x64 and Intel-based Macs.
Also note that it has no hardware encoders- it's reliant on the host CPU / GPU HW to do the real-time encoding.

The generic ones on Amazon for $17 work exactly the same or better.
Don't be ridiculous. Are they perfectly acceptable for most people that don't really care about video quality? Absolutely. But don't lie to people about them being equal to or better than the elgato because that's just not true in any way.

Not everybody uses these for streaming. I use it for a video input from my DSLR to record direct to disk for some video production, and the quality difference is extremely noticeable.

It's not going to replace a professional dedicated recorder but it's the most effective way to get darn near any video camera into a computer at great quality without buying a dedicated card that requires a desktop.
Agreed, although source capture could be transferred to disk raw (AVI) or native, so real-time encode/stream would not be needed. Free SW codecs produce less artifacts than GPU acceleration, even competing well with (non-broadcast) HW codecs - trade off (a lot of) time for a quality, high-bitrate result using commodity multi-purpose HW (PC workstations).

Speaking of max bitrates, here's the comparison between Elgato's other capture HW, noting max bitrate and the two with HW encoding. I think this Cam Link 4K tops out at 30 Mbps but probably dependent on CPU / GPU / RAM resources:

Does anyone know if there's a monitor that records that's not expensive? Recording quality is semi important but don't really care what the screen resolution/quality is like.

I've seen some go for $400 ish for photo equipment world. I've looked on wish and those types of sites.

be warned, most if not all cheap ones say they will do 1080p 60 but they either only do 720p 60, 1080p 30 or downscale the 1080p 60 internally to 720p 60. I have bought several of them, they all use very similar chips.

I finally got around to get the hd 60 s from elgato, I was usibg a cable matters 1080p 60 card and the picture quality on the elgato is significantly better. Input lag is similar for them.

Thats great... so why quote me since I'm talking about streaming. Where's the quote from me saying if you don't stream, buy this over an Elgato?

There is no card that does real 4k 60 for $50. If you're playing Switch at 1080p you might not notice the limitations of the fake specs.
That is correct.

I have a Sony a7rii. Anyone use this with that cam or one of the cheap ones? I'd also like to like record video directly to my laptop with it.
I have elgato 4k for over a year. Hook it up to my Panasonic gh-5 for streaming using obs.

The elgato 4k is incompatible with pci-4. If your video card is using pci-4 you need to go into bios and downgrade it to pci-3.
