We had a similar, but much worse experience with two of our whirlpool gold French Door refrigerators. I say refrigerators because we're on our 3rd one in less than 2 years. The first one was a disaster, the door ice maker auger motor went bad, then the evaporator fan motor iced over twice, and the water inlet valve stopped working. Whirlpool replaced the first one under a lemon law type of situation.
We only had the second refrigerator about 1 week before it started getting getting warm (48 degrees). My wife just about lost it, she'd spent hours and hours of time, holding for customer service over the previous year, and we'd lost 100's of dollars of food due to unsafe high temps in the fridge. Whirlpool customer service is pretty good, they immediately set up an appointment to exchange the 2nd fridge for a new one, with no questions asked.
We've had the current fridge for about a year now with no problems (knock on wood). As I said whirlpool customer service is very good, but I wish we never had to find that out.
Multiple different repairmen also reiterated the fact that we were lucky we didn't buy a Samsung or LG fridge (kind of ironic, as they were there to fix our "good" broken whirlpool), they said most of their service calls were for LG and Samsung refrigerators.
I expected much better quality from an $3,000 American made refrigerator from a well known manufacturer.

That might not be all true. My Whirlpool broke after one month of used and I already requested warranty fixed twice for last 1 year. I talked to one of the local repair guys after he fixed my an older model whirlpool side-by-side . He told me that LG, Samsung and other brands are the worst but Whirlpool French Door Refrigerator is slightly better...
lasted 9months then string of issues.. could barely get anyone to even come out to repair it under warranty. dumped it at 2.5years or so.
Next they got .. wait for it.. LG. again around $2000
It lasted 6months. had 3 warranty repairs including compressor replacement
IIRC it lasted about 3 years and had 4-5 repair visits.
They now have a french door bottom freezer frigidair.
besides the janky ice machine breaking 4x its been pretty good.
i fixed the ice machine it was partially frozen up, a couple months later it decided to never shut off filling the entire freezer with icecubes.
I again thawed it all out.. but it died. They replaced it under warranty.. and its been going strong.. the water filters are a terrible 30$ each though. even generics are over 25$ and dont last long.
My take AVOID ALL KOREAN MODELS.
and check reviews on specific model you are looking at. Even the more reliable brand names seem to have some dud models.

so endup buying the set elsewhere.
I was also told to get units with the ice maker inside instead of on door, as those seem problematic. Don't know about longevity, but hoping it lasts as long as my Frigidaire.
I'm not sure if there are any sure bets with refrigerators anymore. I know our Amana side by side fridge was still working great after 18yrs when we moved. I had to replace two ice makers on it, the evaporator fan once and the compressor start relay. About $200 in parts over an 18yr period. And the very first problem (the icemaker tray) didn't happen until about 8yrs into ownership. I would've bought another Amana, but my wife loved the look of the Whirlpool and I was happy it was built in the U.S.
I just don't think these company's are building appliances to last anymore. I guess it's just a case of designed obsolescence being more profitable than customer satisfaction and brand loyalty.

That's usually from pushing food too far back on the shelves. There should be a gap inside between the back wall of the fridge and the shelves. This is for airflow. If you put too much food in a fridge and push it so far back that it blocks this airflow then the fridge will freeze up the next time the freezer goes through a defrost mode. Whirlpool also makes Kitchen aide. I've noticed that Kitchen aide fridges usually have a large plastic draft tube that prevents this from happening. Same fridges usually just a couple of nice added features.
i am looking for a new refrigerator to replace my old refrigerator, stumbled upon this deal and find out this is the SAME thing that i am trying to get rid off (all the button and layout are exactly the same). i believe i got my copy 8 years ago for less.
anyways. don't get it. they leak. as in actually leaks water from the freezer. this is due to a design flaw where the drain hole rubber gasket get hard around 5th years and seals shut. the water that is supposed to go to the evaporator tray end up in your freezer and leak out from it.. google it before you buy . i have ceramic tile in my kitchen so i don't care, but if you have wood, don't even bother with it.
edit. found the link of the product that i bought 8 years ago. cannot believe Whirlpool selling the same thing after 8 years.

Side note, I'm surprised about all the LG slander on this thread. We've been extremely impressed with our LG tech and appliances. Fridge, freezer, washer, dryer, TVs, etc are all LG. Zero issues with all of them and we've had them for years. I imagine Whirlpool is on par with LG.
