Can't recommend this purchase enough. Price is up from a few years back when I bought it, which is to be expected. If you are going to buy this, do yourself a favor and open a Costco credit card if you don't have one. You will get 2 extra years of warranty. 4 years of warranty, no extra cost, and it's through Costco.

I agree 100%.

We had a similar, but much worse experience with two of our whirlpool gold French Door refrigerators. I say refrigerators because we're on our 3rd one in less than 2 years. The first one was a disaster, the door ice maker auger motor went bad, then the evaporator fan motor iced over twice, and the water inlet valve stopped working. Whirlpool replaced the first one under a lemon law type of situation.

We only had the second refrigerator about 1 week before it started getting getting warm (48 degrees). My wife just about lost it, she'd spent hours and hours of time, holding for customer service over the previous year, and we'd lost 100's of dollars of food due to unsafe high temps in the fridge. Whirlpool customer service is pretty good, they immediately set up an appointment to exchange the 2nd fridge for a new one, with no questions asked.

We've had the current fridge for about a year now with no problems (knock on wood). As I said whirlpool customer service is very good, but I wish we never had to find that out.

Multiple different repairmen also reiterated the fact that we were lucky we didn't buy a Samsung or LG fridge (kind of ironic, as they were there to fix our "good" broken whirlpool), they said most of their service calls were for LG and Samsung refrigerators.

I expected much better quality from an $3,000 American made refrigerator from a well known manufacturer.

It really feels like there are no good brands anymore for most appliances, fridges included. Any research winds up showing mostly negative reviews, and sure, that's probably partly self selecting bias, but it's depressing. Are there any good ones out there?

Actually LG is rated the most reliable...whirlpool is in the middle and Samsung is at the bottom

You can always cancel your membership later and they'll prorate it. The best time to get a Costco membership is when they do promos to make the membership free (or close to it) the first year. However, to lock in the extra 2 years of warranty coverage, you may want to get the Costco card and become a Costco family Smilie.

Side note, I'm surprised about all the LG slander on this thread. We've been extremely impressed with our LG tech and appliances. Fridge, freezer, washer, dryer, TVs, etc are all LG. Zero issues with all of them and we've had them for years. I imagine Whirlpool is on par with LG.
We had LG fridge, stove, and dishwasher at our old house and also had no problems with any of them the whole time we lived there 🤷 ♂️

It says it has a 2 year manufacturer warranty. Is that different than the warranty you get as a Costco member?

I've owed this fridge for about a year and a half. Overall it's been a great fridge. My biggest complaint is that it is noisy. Looking at reviews it seems to be a common thing and I don't think mine is even as bad as some of the reviews I've seen. Can easily hear it all around the main area of the house though. Not so bad that if you are over in the living room watching TV it bothers you, but still erks me when the house is quiet.

My buddy recently got a Samsung refrigerator and it's almost completely quiet. So comparing the two on sound the Samsung definitely won.

Thanks. Got one. Signed up for the Costco credit card too, but only got a 1200 limit and looks like I had to go to the store to print a temporary card. Oh well, whirlpool fridges are some of the most reliable, so I will make due with a 2 year warranty.
Buy a ~$500 item (or more, depending on tax). Pay the bill immediately (have to link bank accounts, then return item, thereby giving yourself a credit, now your credit limit is temporarily increased by that amount and you can cover the fridge... just a thought.

We've had problems with both ice makers in our 2010 Samsung 28 cu ft. Finding someone to work on them was a challenge, but luckily they occurred under warranty.

But last month, the fridge was even quieter than your buddy's. Like DEAD quiet. The inverter board powering the compressor fried. I was lucky to even find the part in the U.S. Samsung's own authorized parts distributor for the U.S. showed it on backorder for months. Luckily for me 1) a regional parts distributor had ONE left 2) others have had this problem and shared how to diagnose and fix it on the internet.

To the person complaining about nothing having changed in this Whirlpool refrigerator in the past 8 years: that's probably a good thing. The design is apparently working well for the marketplace, and parts will be more likely available. It's not like there has been a revolution in refrigerator cooling technology in the past few decades. Some efficiency improvements (like inverter compressors) have actually come at the cost of reliability and, well, cost.

I bought my dad a fridge back in October 2020, but finally signed up for the costco credit card last month in anticipation of more purchases this year. Is there a way to return and rebuy the fridge (in paperwork only) so I can get the extended total warranty of 4 years instead of 2 years? Certainly do not want to actually physically return it.

I got this (or a very similar Whirlpool fridge) from Costco in 11/2016. I won't say much about the price, but this is a good price for this fridge now (with the price increases that have occurred since that time). The pull out door is great. No issues, other than a bit noisy, but nothing too crazy. I could see it being a bigger issue if you have an open kitchen though. One other thing is to make sure you have the space to swing the doors open if you need to. My clearance was a bit tight, so it wasn't easy to get to the ice maker if I needed to mess around with it.

One last thing is in some areas Costco appliance delivery is a real shitstorm right now. If you head over the Costco reddit you'll see horror stories. Just be aware there might be delays and really poor installation.

Have been using this for the last 9 months. Reviews about it being noisy is correct. However, not bad if you are not that sensitive. Other than that it is doing good so far.

Counter depths never go on sale. I've not been in a place that doesn't have one. Who are all these folks that have full size fridges? I'm jelly

I have this fridge for 3 months so far. It has less depth than other standard depth fridges, I think it's a good middle-ground between counter depth and standard. I had my freezer build up frost once, probably from not closing completely, but it's easy to defrost the fridge (just move the items to the fridge for a bit, turn off the cooling from the display, and get some towels).
The ice maker makes a loud sound which can be concerning to some homes, fortunately I don't use the ice maker often. Moving around shelves is easy, space feels fine, there's a lot of small convenient features that surprised me.

I mostly hear to avoid Samsung/LG first, and even so all other brands have their own downsides and unreliability, especially for french doors.

I can't give a confident yes or no to this fridge specifically since it's only been 3 months, I'm just listing my experience so far.

The inverter driven compressors are very sensitive to power fluctuations, but the trade off is the compressor runs more efficiently.

The board you mention is a module made up of AC to DC components which are all super common and used in everything from radios to server power supplies.

They're so frequently used that producing and implementing a bad batch that goes undetected for a decade is less likely than winning the lottery.

It's never brought up, but clean power with a proper ground on a circuit without much load is more important than ever with these newer units.

I'd be willing to bet your house fried the module, rather than it failed on its own.

I need counter depth as well, mostly for aesthetics though. Just purchased a GE fridge from Home Depot this week after looking for a deal for weeks. Would jump all over this if it were counter depth.
