There is actually a $1.75 coupon right now too, that makes the deal a little slicker. Usable multiple times. With the coupon clicked, it's only $1.25 more than the all time low from the end of 2020, as per the camel

I'm a little at a loss why people are buying these when an NVME is $5 more? Only reason to go for sata IMO is if you don't have open NVME slots and you need more storage....in which case, 500g doesn't make lots of sense. Go for 2TB+... 500gb is boot drive or external portable SSD size.

Older laptops may not support nvme, and they generally don't need enormous hdds when they're repurposed into browsing laptops for the elderly or homework laptops for the kiddos. At this price, the mx500 half tb would make sense for instances like those.

For a newer pc, nvme all the way.

Have an old desktop I wouldn't mind breathing new life into.

This can be made to fit right?

The current drive is 1TB across a few partitions BUT total data on it is well under 500GB. Will the software included be intelligent enough to allow me to transfer everything over to SSD? and then I can format the 1TB drive and use it for extra storage in Windows?

Yeah maybe... pretty limited use case right there though. Even in an older laptop I'd pay the extra few bucks for at least 1 TB.

People are buying them; I see posts for 500gb sata all the time on this forum. I don't think many of these people should be buying them. Too many people cheaping out on small drives / slower drives just to save a like $5-$10 - doesn't make sense.
Not everyone has the need for that much storage volume. I might be the exception but, even as most phones stopped getting expandable storage I've never filled up 32-64GB phones of mine. I still have space in an early 2000's laptop with a 256GB HDD even after I installed Windows 10.

Sure. Keep the current drive as well. Use the SSD for OS and applications. Use the old drive to maintain storage of stuff that's not used often or doesn't need to be accessed quickly.

You are the exception. A single game these days can be 100gb. A 4k video is about 1gb per 90 seconds. Raw photos 50mb per shot. Adds up real quick.

I may be a minority demographic, but probably not an exception. We'd have to see how many PC users are gamers, photo/videographers.

I have a similar model with over 16,000 hours on it so if anyone is in need of a budget SSD for an older system this is definitely a safe choice.
