Yup you'd need Z490/upcoming Z590.

It's most likely not worth the upgrade. You're looking at 650-700 minimum just to upgrade to a chipset with an EOL this year.

Intel usually sticks to a "tick-tock" 2-year cycle for motherboard/CPU compatibility. If you enjoy upgrading parts relatively often, one strategy is to pair a higher-end motherboard with a lower-end CPU for the "tick" generation (e.g. a $300 Z490 motherboard + $160 10th gen i5-10400), then swap out to the flagship "tock" CPU (e.g. i9-11900K).

In the past, the benefit to doing this was that:
  1. The higher-end boards tend to enjoy longer support in terms of BIOS updates, etc. The manufacturers don't go to great lengths to make sure their $120 motherboards remain optimized.
  2. The "tock"-generation flagship CPU has always held it's value disproportionally well over time. Of course, the combination of Intel's incompetence and AMD's rise has nearly put an end to that. But there are still a ton of people out there who want to upgrade their pre-built PC without having to change a bunch of parts. And getting an used CPU on eBay is the easiest way to do that.

Says I can on their website when I'm looking at my order details. I just noticed the processor I bought is on sale as well. Speaking to an agent right now to get the price difference. $344.99

I only make a new build when a new chipset comes out - able to keep the same mobo for 6 years at a time whilst still having a robust system even at the tail end of those years. They say there's no future proofing but this is the closest thing to that. Buying alder lake later this year.
