This is the most anyone should EVER pay for this set. They upped the amount of bits to pad the number, as you used to get this style case and around 280-300 pieces for $20-$30 less.

Sears sucks.
Sorry, it just had to be said. These kits are filled with stuff you won't use for fixing a car, and missing critical things, like pliers, socket extensions, actual screwdrivers, chisels, a lot more wrenches, a hammer... I could go on, but these kits aren't built well for car repair. They seem built for making people think they have lots of tools, and maybe for making you come back to Sears for all the stuff they're missing.

Consider a brake job:
1/2" breaker bar to loosen lug nuts: Not included
Jack car (no jack included, of course)
Jack Stand: Not included
Wheel chocks: Not included
1/2" ratchet with deep socket to remove lug nuts: It doesn't look like they include 1/2" deep sockets
Break caliper bolts loose — 14mm bolt with breaker bar: No breaker bar
Remove caliper with 3/8" ratchet — included!
OR: Bang on brake drum with mallet to loosen. Not included.
Use pliers to remove brake pad springs — not included
OR, pivot brake caliper and secure with bungee — not included.
Measure brake pad thickness: Not included
Measure rotor or drum thickness: Not included
Use ignition wrench to bleed brakes: Not included
Use catch bottle and hose to bleed brakes: Not included.

And that's a very simple job. In general, these sets are very deficient and they include a bunch of screwdriver bits you'll never use.

They don't include the car either. Terrible.

I don't think they list as auto mechanic kit. It is more like basic home repair. The items you list missing won't find it 99% of the tool set in normal DIYer kit. People might as well buy their own tool separately. Just changed all four corners suspension with all control arm. I need to get extra set or T-torx socket and bit. 21mm wrench. (Most kit stopped at 18mm).

It is a good start kit.

You forgot torque wrench on your list.

96 screwdriver bits is overkill. 40 hex keys is a MUST HAVE item for every tool set. It could use more combination wrenches but it will make the tool set really heavy for portability and probably a great chance on breaking the handle. A big pro is storage space with a tool set. You can use the storage space for breaker bars, gloves, extra extensions and adapters....... I have a plastic craftsman tool box set with the 3 aluminum sliding drawers and the top lid has huge storage space. The storage space is so convenient with tool sets.

I don't know if you are being sarcastic or just making a joke with the hammers, pliers, chisels, breaker bars, jack stands, wheel chocks, etc.. If you look at mechanic sets in this price range, none of them come with that stuff especially all together in a portable carry case. My craftsman jack stands alone cost like $25, breaker bars set $25, hammer $15, etc.... All that stuff greatly increases the price. None of the Kobalt and Husky tool sets for $150 comes with jack stands, hammer, pliers, breaker bars. etc. either.

I will not buy a tool set unless it comes with wheel chocks.

A mechanics set was never meant to be every tool you might need. It's all the sockets and ratchets a mechanic would commonly need. Bigger mechanics sets include less common sockets.

Even wrenches are often considered fluff if you're buying a mechanics set, as you would typically buy a mechanics wrench set to go with your mechanics socket set.

Combined tool sets are also a selection, not everything you might need. For example, cars aren't the only mechanical thing you might need a tool set to work on.

Your expectations are wrong. These sets have been marketed like this for ages, at least since the 1970s and prior.

Of course, but my point is that this kit is really missing important things and filled with fluff that you won't use. You'll need screwdrivers and pliers, for instance. That's pretty basic. And they don't give you enough wrenches at all. Considering how huge this set seems to be and how comprehensive it appears, it's missing a lot of basics.

You're totally wrong. I bought my Sears Mechanics tool set in 1983 and it came with enough wrenches and screwdrivers to work with, and six inch extensions, not useless 2" extensions. I still have the ratchets and sockets from that set. They didn't include any of those stupid bits back then. I've worked on a lot of cars and I know what tools you need.

Back in the 80's, guys worked on cars and if we went into Sears and it had a useless set like this, nobody would buy it. We knew.

This is not a good set of tools. It's missing way too many important parts, and buying the individual wrenches and sockets, or another wrench set destroys the value and makes the fitted case useless. Get a different set if you're starting out. Not this one. Example: This set has only 8 wrenches, SAE and Metric. So that's really only four wrenches. In Metric, you should have 6~7mm to 18mm or so. No way is four wrenches enough.

Maybe this one; it's a lot better:

Or even this, but it's a lot more:
https://www.sears.com/craftsman-3...A028766676

If you only work on imports and not US cars, THIS is pretty complete, at $350:
https://www.sears.com/craftsman-2...A009859896

If you want to stay under $200, this set is way better. No fluff, but no Torx or hex, either.
