About this game:
  • Single-player
  • Genre: Action, Adventure, Platformer, Role-Playing
  • Game file size: 1.0 GB
  • Welcome to Chasm, an action-adventure game in which you play a new recruit undertaking your first mission for the Guildean Kingdom. YouTube Review [youtube.com]

Only an hour into it, but gameplay feels fluid and very reminiscent of the Gameboy Advance and Nintendo DS Castlevania games (albeit, not as... sinister (?) in style or tone). Solid, under-the-radar indie "Metroidvania" clone (especially if you have a few eShop Gold Points to spend) Smilie

Chasm was in Kickstarter hell for a long time and still came out feeling incomplete, one which overpromised and eventually delivered on those promises, but in halfhearted or broken ways. It's one of the better examples of the early Kickstarter games for this. There's a community of "metroidvania" fans and this one often receives ire. I liked it better than most, but after about two dungeons (3 hours) you've experienced almost the entirety of what the game will offer. With the hype and background of the developer, it's kind of a sad example of the glut of games that dragged on due to over-promising, under-managment, and having to take time on Kickstarter rewards and developing those than completing a game. If you're hungry for a new game, 8 bucks can be a lot or a little depending on how you stretch it.

Average time to beat: 10 hours
Metacritic Score: 72/100.
*had. Like the majority of games that have issues on launch, they patched and updated it. Unfortunately, as is often also the case, people continue to refer to the initial launch issues for months, even years later as if they were still an issue.

Take offense to calling it a clone but it does follow the formula. I blew through it in about a week. Very fun.

Good info...I would recommend the spiritual successor of Casltevania, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. It does cost a lot more but has much more contents and replayability... I got it on the PC on sale for about 16 and paid an extra $9 for the music to support the developer.
Actually for $10 Ritual of the night can be had on iOS/Android with reduced quality but still a lot more contents.

Nothing offensive about it, though I do think the term "inspired by" or "in the style of" makes more sense.

Bloodstained has performance issues on switch iirc.

I'm playing Ritual of the Night and it's fine, reminds me of Symphony of the Night. Only bad thing to me is the restart after you die, takes awhile about 3ish minutes.

I personally do not feel it plays anything like a Castlevania game. Wasn't a fan of Chasm as much as I wanted to like it.

To be fair, Bloodstained had performance issues on every console. I played it on Xbox about 8 months ago and it had pretty consistent frame rate dips and weird bugs. I still had a good time with it, but I'm just saying don't let those issues be the reason why you skip the game since it's still playable.

---

As far as Chasm, I love the Metroidvania genre and this game was one of the most basically generic entrees in it. There's not much to it that makes it stand out and combat is not very deep. The fact that it's "procedurally generated" is actually a detriment, in my opinion, since, because key objectives are randomly placed on the map, there is never a clear path of where you have to go.

Progressing usually devolves to: "oh, you just got a new upgrade that lets you double jump? Well backtrack to every location you can remember (because there's no way to mark the map) where double jumping would have been used and hope that one of them is the right path forward. But more than likely you'll just travel a room or two and hit a small upgrade (health, etc) with no other way forward then have to travel across the world to another location and try again."

For $8, you can find much more enjoyable Metroidvanias that often hit that price when they're on sale like Hollow Knight, Rive, Sundered, and Aggelos.

Count me as one of the fans of this game. I always recommend it to people as a terrific example of a 16-bit styled action-platform RPG. Definitely has a very SNES feel to it. If you're an old-school gamer getting this is a no-brainer IMO.

Aggelos has bugs too. In particular, it lost large quantities of my saved progress. I gave up on that game immediately. I also thought Chasm was a better game. Of course hollow knight is 100% fantabulous. I'm playing through that now (got about 15hrs in on PC and switched to... Switch. )
