I'll be onboard in a heartbeat when Starlink becomes available in my area. I've been with Viasat since they were WildBlue when they only had one satellite (Old Bird), and they are as sleazy as they come. Bye-bye.

That said; I'm not sure that there's any burning need to jump on a Pre-Order list. The cost of equipment, taxes and service fees will price a fair number of people out. We're still in the blue sky phase of this enterprise, and Elon tends to talk a lot of shite. I'd like to see how real Starlink continues to be once it gets past Beta.

And finally - no. The Starlink business model is not designed to roll out to every Shekgalagari village in Botswana. While it would be nice to ensure that every amenity is available globally for a tiny fraction of what it costs to provide, that's a "somebody else's money" solution.
It's not that it isn't designed to roll out to every village, it's just that it won't be the same setup. It'll likely be installed at various areas and accessed by wifi rather than everyone having their own setup.

"the Starlink Kit are [sic]for use exclusively at the address you provided in your Order[sic]"

No putting this on your RV.

I have been looking forward to this for a while! I have wireless internet right now that is actually decent for being rural with no access to cable nor dsl (phone company too cheap to update equipment) and I just got 51ms ping, 11mbps down and almost 5mbps up....for $99 a month. That $99 includes unlimited data but for streaming movies and such it just plain sucks. Those speeds are burst speeds also as you will notice it drop off over longer periods of time (like youtube videos). Biggest concern I have is the cost of the equipment! I have a dish and a box from the provider now that I got WITH INSTALL for under $100.

Are people seeing speeds where it is worth the extra $500? I read online that some people are having massive speed drops since more people have connected but nothing is verified. Does anyone here actually have the system running and can share insight?

If 5g home ever gets released nationwide (in the USA) I can't see Starlink being able to compete in the long run.....

Ya this is designed for people in the boonies, irregardless of how much you love Elon, stick with your fiber or high speed cable, even in low orbit the theoretical minimum latency is much higher than your 5ms fios

Also 20ms is a lie- it's theoretically not possible even in low orbit for them to achieve this on a round trip transmission

I have a friend who was able to install one of the first kits and subscribe and yes he is out in the boonies. He is getting 90mps download speeds and is streaming 4k so for some there is a need although the install kit price is steep. He did his own install and said it was a snap.

20's is possible and proven it is possible in plenty of videos of the beta so far. considering i get 10-20ms on my wired connection, starlink isn't bad

Expensive, who cleans up the crap all these satellites leave behind? Far better solution is to upgrade America's electrical grid and include internet for a real future. Remember when satellite tv was a thing?

Telco's already got $400 billion in grants to expand our nations broadband thanks to US tax payers and have done literally nothing with it. they have 0 incentive to build out to rural areas.

starlink sats will deorbit and burn up in earths atmosphere when they reach end of life.

Unless you've been living under a rock there is nothing slick about this deal. Pricing for this service has been readily available for months.

For most people in the rural sections of the US with no cable this isn't competitive unless SL significantly increases those speeds. If you live anywhere near a cell tower get a modem/router that takes a SIM card and sign up for an RV plan with the carrier or one of the carriers on that tower. Check the RV fan web sites for all of the details, and for the modem reviews, plan reviews etc. I recommend the MOFI modem/router but I have not kept up with all of the latest. if you are somewhat distant from a cell tower you may need to get an outdoor YAGA antenna to amplify the signal— that is maybe $100– not sure. For me living in a fairly rural area but not too far from a 4G LTE tower I get in the range of 30mbps to 100 mbps download and about 10mbps to 40mbps upload depending on the time of day etc . Most of the time it is around 60 mbps to 70mbps down. Latency is fairly constant at about 25ms . Plans range from $25 /mo with data limits to the $50 to $70 per month range for unlimited data use last I looked
