as a mobile internet user (i lived in a large rv with my family twice, moving constantly), i can tell you that this (for the price) is outrageously bad. mobile internet through a sim card/router solution is available in the vast majority of the country now, at 4g lte and soon 5g speeds, which suffice for anything but the most hardcore users. hardware is under $200. monthly service can for certain match this price point. you can use it in motion or fixed, and will NOT need a clear view of the sky, or have any problems with satellite connectivity. the reason starlink is of interest to people is ONLY DUE TO MUSK'S CULT OF PERSONALITY (and possibly ignorance to the alternatives that are available TODAY). if musk takes this to the 3rd world, at a price they can afford, i will retract this entire statement.
You are delusional. Plenty of places (downtown, suburb or rural) don't have a usable 4G Internet speed (way lower than <5Mbps). 4G plans I am aware of all come with caps (or no clear caps but will drop you as a customer if your usage is "deeded excessive")

$100/mo isn't too bad when no comparable options are available, I would even consider it for backup Internet if it proves to be reasonably reliable

Luckily sprint hasn't said my $15 unlimited tablet plan that I use easytether with and a GL.iNET GL-MT300N mini router is excessive and I use around 650gb a month.

Sprint was still offering decent options, before the merger at least. I never paid much attention because they covered very, very little area around here and the least little bit of service of any kind was 70 miles away from me, and barely outside the town limits there, none on the highway. Now tmobile is still 40-50 miles so I still don't pay much attention. I believe this should show what Sprint's native coverage looked like (before the merger) https://coverage.sprint.com/mycov...overageMap Without roaming, not much. I believe Calyx is still available, for example, and it's still a good option, last I saw. It's good to know they let you keep that plan, unlike others that end good plans. Like ATT just ending (the usefulness of) their postpaid tablet plan that people were using in routers for years, after ending the prepaid version earlier, as well as the "unlimited" plans that the resellers were using.

I was hyped about this but it seems its too pricey right now. Wasn't the goal to make internet affordable globally?
Nothing is affordable when it's new. Give it 5 to 10 years before it's 29.99 a month

Ordered and shipped. Comes Monday.

I have Comcast "gigabit" (usually see around 300-400 mbps). Price has gone from $75/mo to $125/mo in the past year, and is apparently rising again to $199. They also won't allow me to buy internet without cable. They've also imposed data caps.

I will take the hit on speed and reliability with no complaints because I'm ecstatic to tell Comcast to shove it.

For rural area, i think starlink is a revolution since cable run at potato speed for $60-80/month internet only plan
10Mb for $60 DSL from AT&T and I can't buy more. Ive been waiting for the moment to give someone money to get more speed. Anyone that lives down the road from me is limited to 5Mb. Honestly I'm pretty lucky I can even get DSL in the country.

Got the email. They want $99 right now, but say it could be six months before I actually get service. Then, $500 more for the equipment, plus shipping and tax.
The $99 deposit counts towards the $500. Actual prices depends on the shipping and tax.

Can we get a AMEN people!

If there is no competition, they will get away with it too. Yes it will be a beautiful day to say goodbye to 8 page cable bills..

Plug in a antenna for TV. There are lots of alternatives to traditional cable now days and you wont be paying for corporates news and programming from those political hacks.. I always resented paying about $10 a month just to cover the ESPN part of the package.

I always resented paying about $10 a month just to cover the CNN, and ESPN part of the package. Just give me data, they can keep the cable TV and all the crap they fund and lobby for.. I said goodbye to Netflix too..

From a lot of the posts here it seems like half the population on SD has never left the city limits. Broadband is still a huge problem in the US, and even worse in many parts of the world. $99 for this is a major deal, and $500 for a 2-way self aligning satellite system is a very good deal.

Exactly. Internet in the US is a patchwork with some good, some bad, and some in the middle.

I live in a large metro area and this is an interesting option. I can get wireless internet through TMO with no data caps for $50/mo, but the speeds are terrible (2-20) because the towers are saturated. Cox has better speeds (*50+ down) for $65/mo, but they also have 1.25gb data caps.

If starlink can deliver 20-150 with no data caps for $100/mo, that's a compelling option, especially if it's symmetrical.

*During the start of the pandemic they didn't have enough fiber and speeds were as bad or worse than TMO, but things have been better since they put in a bunch more fiber.

A friend went live last week with pretty good service in California's central Sierra Nevada. 181Mbps down, 21.2Mbps up, ping 57ms, so about 40ms additional latency.

I've been paying $30 for Charter for 15 years. This seems pretty steep.

Here's hoping Tmobile's 5G home internet turns out OK/usable.
I just tried Tmobile and will be returning. No 5G in my area. Sticking with the cable company for now.

I'd be happy to pay $30 if I could get at least what I have now, but I pay $60 for janky DSL @ 10Mbit.
