I believe the Ring paid subscription is necessary to have any video stored in the cloud for playback. Without the subscription, one could activate the camera to view a live stream without it being recorded.

I have like 5 without the cloud service; I use it for live cam via the app whenever the alarm chimes. So far only animals. Ring with Solar I found was solid the others were a bit flaky.

I owned some Ring Wired and Battery. Wired one runs fast and no issue. My suggestion is to NOT buy the one with battery, BUY wired. Battery one is very unstable and takes longer time to load live feed and recording. Ring will even give you free Chime to help increase the wifi strength if you reported this issue, but no help because it caused by the power which is the battery model.
