hybrid advice new vs used

Looking for opinions on a car purchase for a myself and teenage drivers who need to drive to school when it is back to in person if ever.
Spouse and I have 2 suvs, nicer, reliable (lexus) but poor gas mileage, and I make long 100-220 mile trips weekly, so I am looking at used and new hybrids, but am considering the most cost effective vs reliable options. A model 3 or Y is what I would get for myself, but does not fit my thoughts on the best deal and for teenage drivers. Have considered insight, prius, used volt(not enough seats.)
Considering a used 2012gen 3 Prius plug in for 8k, it test drives clean and seems like a good deal, but am considering a new gen 4 prius AWD as we get ice and snow 2 months a year and have a steep driveway, and the new cars have the automatic braking. One of the 2012 used prius I test drove this week actually broke down during the test drive, and I have researched egr and valve issues on the gen 3, thinking a new car may be less cost long term vs dealing with a 10 year old gen 3.
Would probably have this car kept in the family 15 years if new.
Any opinions from those that have owned or looked at cost calculations on new vs old and cost breakdowns? Thanks

My opinion on used EV is every battery has a life cycle. Buying used may not be bad if the battery is relatively young. Also, the cold weather saps some charge giving it less range.
