The m1 uses unified memory so the ram, cpu, gpu and other components are part of the same chip allowing for much faster read/writes to memory. Don't think user upgradable is even possible here. Plus with how fast it is, I've read the 8gb performs as well as a 16gb machine in the x86 architecture. Remember apple ios devices have a lot less memory than the competition but apple devices always blow away the competition in performance.

As someone who currently own the MBA m1 (8G ram), I would highly recommend go with 16G ram. (Especially for those who would keep lots of tabs/apps open)

Why can't they at least put 16 gigs a memory in these things?

I have an M1 Macbook Air 8/256 and it is awesome. If the mini fits your use case and you don't need portability or a screen, this is a great deal. Costco returns / warranty is bonus.

A lot of the initial complaints like bluetooth issues and various compatibility issues have mostly been worked out with software updates. I haven't experienced any issues with mine. One thing to consider is that if you can spare the extra few hundred bucks, you can get the Macbook air and then just connect it to a monitor and wireless keyboards via USB-C hub and get the best of both worlds.

So you can spend more when they release the "upgrade".

I think there might be a slight difference in the CPU on the air and there is no fan so thermal issues may slow things down under load. I would agree for most use cases the air is a better value.

You are correct (8 vs 7 core GPU and no fan on the MBA). Reviews pretty much across the board indicate that the difference isn't noticeable except under heavy and extended use cases (e.g. rendering a bunch of 4 or 8k video), and even then isn't a huge deal. There have been some big differences between 8 and 16gb performance on very demanding tasks, but means the difference between a 20 min rather than 10 min rendering times on 8k video. I do a lot of video editing with GoPro 4k 100mb/s footage and the 8/256 has done great for me. I do have an external usb-c SSD to store my footage. For 95% of people, the 8/256 Mini or Air are perfect options.

I really wish Apple would come back to reality on the component upgrade prices. You are over $1k if you opt for a 16/512 mini, and approaching $1,500 for an Air, which is pretty steep.

It entirely depends on what you plan to use it for. If you're not already deep into using Apple products / in the ecosystem then a regular Windows desktop will likely be better for you.
