The m1 uses unified memory so the ram, cpu, gpu and other components are part of the same chip allowing for much faster read/writes to memory. Don't think user upgradable is even possible here. Plus with how fast it is, I've read the 8gb performs as well as a 16gb machine in the x86 architecture. Remember apple ios devices have a lot less memory than the competition but apple devices always blow away the competition in performance.

As someone who currently own the MBA m1 (8G ram), I would highly recommend go with 16G ram. (Especially for those who would keep lots of tabs/apps open)

Why can't they at least put 16 gigs a memory in these things?

I've had my M1 Mac Mini since November and love it. It's super fast. I don't do much video editing but recently had to make an 11 minute slideshow with music in iMovie. Exporting it initially into a .mp4 file took about 10 minutes and converting it to .mkv using Handbrake took about 5. Would've taken the better half of an hour for my old 2019 Intel MacBook Pro to do the same thing.

I haven't seen the need for 16 GB RAM, but I'm more of an average user. I've read that the way the RAM is intertwined with these M1 processors is different and it's more efficient. FWIW, I was able to keep iMovie open for days while working on the project and also had multiple apps (Safari with 5+ tabs, Citrix Workspace for work, Spotify, Messages, Email, Edge) open without any noticeable slowdown.

Anyone using this a HTPC? Everything sounds good on paper, I plan to hook it up with a Lenovo N5902 hooked up to a 4k tv and just use browsers for streaming content. Thanks.

I really want one but have lasted 10 years on my Celeron desktop, I'll probably wait until the next version assuming they come out yearly. Unless I get across a used one of these for a great deal

Great deal. I think this is the first time it's dropped to $600. I'd be all over this if I needed the upgrade.

This is brand new model with total new architecture so don't expect any new model for next 2-3 years.

I thought apple comes out with new macs every year or is it just iPhones/iPads? I guess I was thinking and maybe incorrectly that all of apples stuff will be using the same m chips now and just figured they will get chip upgrades yearly. I have no doubt the base would be all I need and last for a long ass time
