I have a pair of Sennheiser HD 650 headphones.

Are these really any better? Every few years a new number increments, and the prices go up. Why?
HD800 has been around forever. Massdrop likes to "retune" and co-brand headphones. Cost goes down (relatively) and manufacturers has guarantee orders and can use up their stockpile of unused components.

I have heard them and they are better. These require some pretty solid front end gear to sound great. I have kind of gone up the chain to high end and realized everything gets finicky more than I want to mess with. Sadly I find myself using my Koss KPH-30i more than my 6xx these days because anything can drive them.

Worth noting that $1,100 is only the launch price for the first 3000 units scheduled to ship in November. Price for future batches will increase to "$1200+"

Bought with PayPal Credit for 6 months no interest and will decide after seeing some reviews whether or not to keep my order. You can cancel for a full refund at any time before they ship.

I'm sure slightly better, but once you get over $100 the return on your headphone investment diminishes drastically. If you are happy with your 650s stick with them. I have the 58X Jubilees and have enjoyed them for years. I tried a friends $1500 headphones and I guess they sounded a little better, not $1350 better. As someone posted earlier, just getting the thousand dollar headphones isn't enough. You have to make sure you have higher end equipment to drive them. It is a money pit most people are better off avoiding.

This is a terrible deal FYI, nobody should be buying this.

Here's why:

There's a 9 month wait time for these. That's a farking long time.

The HD8xx sound signature has changed. Whether it's good or not remains to be seen but are you willing to drop 4 figures being their guinea pig?

The HD8xx is $1100 right now - HD800S goes on sale for $1050 at least once a year and with the 9 month lead time for the HD8xx, you're almost guaranteed to get the HD800S for $1050 at some point before then.

The HD8xx is also missing a balanced cable, which comes default with the HD800S. That's a $300 cable.

Given the higher price, long lead time, lack of balanced cable, and sound signature that changed (tbd on how it sounds) it should be a HARD pass.

I like the HD800 for classical music. They are quick and airy. For pop/rock/electronica I prefer the HD600/HD650. You don't need an amp to get good sound from these (or most other headphones) but they will sound *better* with an amp. I usually advice people to start with good headphones ($250 and up but really as much as you can afford), then add an amp ($100 and up), and finally upgrade your source and/or DAC ($100 and up). My daily drivers is the Focal Utopia fed by a Chord Hugo2 DAC (mostly Qobuz).

If you aren't sure about these I would recommend trying to listen to the HD650's and these and compare. They sound terrific, don't get me wrong, but I see them as a little more specialized than other sets in a way.

AVOID....HD800 is a good headphone, HD800S is an arguable improvement. They changed the frequency response on the HD8XX in almost all the wrong ways and you won't get the same after-sale support.

I once had the HD 600's which are similar to the 650's with less bass. Back when I was trying to find the perfect headphones for me. I tried a lot of them. I agonized for several years over headphones. I ended up selling my HD 600s because I wanted soundstage (the 600s and 650s have more narrow soundstage than their big brothers) I bought the HD 700s because they fit most of my needs, despite having some flaws.

I always assumed the HD 800 were the pinnacle - massive soundstage with outstanding imaging. I visited an audio store that let me demo the HD 800s. I was so let down when I compared them to my HD 700s. While they did have more soundstage the sound wasn't radically different. It was better, but not a $800 difference (From my 700s which were maybe 90% of the HD800s)

That day I ended my headphone quest and for the past few years have used my HD 700s with my computer and for gaming. But, I have lately been thinking of going another direction. And this does tempt me.

but, as for your question, yes, HD800s are much better than HD650s, but that doesn't mean that they are right for you.

If only it were easier to test these out in stores, it would really help a lot of people understand whether these are for you or not.

The HD8XX has different tuning, are you sure you have heard them and not the HD800? They are not like the 6XX versus 650 which had the same drivers/tuning/overall design.
