You're better off with a leave-in wired probe for smoking imo. Bonus points if it can send bluetooth updates to your phone. Smoked pork you just take alllll the way up to 204F, and it's going to take long enough I doubt you'll want to babysit all the way through.

This is awesome for say tempering chocolate, but overkill for most home cooking when you can get 95% of the performance for 20% of the cost with a thermopop or other budget instant read.

Never overcook meat again. It will change your life culinarily. This is a good deal: the motion sleep, auto backlight, and autorotation make this a worthy upgrade over the thermopop and original thermapen

I checked some coupon codes that I could find and none of them worked. The "Save 10% so we can spam you" popup disclaimer says it doesn't work on sale items, so I assumed it wouldn't work.

I tried the MK4 at a friend's house with Ribeyes on a hot grill, it temps food in like 2-3 secs. That's the magic number before you start singeing the hairs on your knuckles, like I do when using my thermopro pen, which temps ~4-5 secs.

Had the old Thermapen, it gave up its soul after 6-7 yrs. Bought MK4 at a reduced price off that I got in consideration of my original one going bad.
MK4 is a definite improvement over the old model in some seemingly minor improvements which make its use definitely more convenient. In addition, the MK4 uses AAA batteries, vs. button types with the old one.

For me the majority of use is in reheating leftovers. Just reheat it to the safe temp, no more overheating and drying it out. Of course, I do use it in initial cooking, too.

Thx OP. Have the original. This will be a nice gift for a family member. And I got to use my Amex PayPal $30 cash back. One thing that people overlook about these Thermocouple based thermometers is that the probe tip is very slim, so you're not making large holes in your meat when grilling, unlike some of the cheaper probes that are much larger.
