Green Top Hunt Fish [greentophuntfish.com]has the Mitchell 308 Pro Series Spinning reel on sale for 50% off MSRP: $34.99. Store pickup in Virginia is free, otherwise shipping is $10 which at $45 is still significantly cheaper than basspro [basspro.com]and cabelas selling the reel for $70. I do not own the reel myself so i cannot comment on the quality, but people on BPS rate it 4.2 stars on 100+ reviews.

Was just there yesterday and almost picked one up. They have a lot of rods cheaper than Amazon also. Definitely worth an in store visit if you've never been and live close.

I almost exclusively buy Mitchell reels, some of the best quality:pricepoint ratios out there, IMO. My uncle always raved about them when I was a kid and have stuck with them since. I have a couple 300's and a bunch of 308x's, really like them.

I have my Dads old Michell closed face reels from when I was a tike in the 60s. I take apart clean and oil they still work like a charm. My first open face reels in the 70s was Garcia/Michell still works perfectly. I assume they merged together during that time frame, good stuff then I don't know if they are still but I may take a chance.

Dunnno why anyone would spend $35 on a Mitchell when Daiwa and Penn own the market for a reason.

Mitchells used to be rock solid dependable. Not sure if it is the same company as back in the day, but the Mitchell 308 I use for trout is at least 40 years old. If it is even half the quality as the old 308s, then it is well worth it.

The old French Mitchell has been long dead, and the 308, which is still sold on eBay and flea markets for actually more than $35 in used condition is probably going to last longer than the ones that are sold now, made in china. With that said, the old French made Mitchell doesn't have smooth 10 bearing system nor an instant anti reverse and probably weighs more than 70pct than these. Not to mention that the old Mitchell 308s are supposed to be ultra light reel holding between 4 to 6 lb mono, not upto 10lb like these. Oh and the old ones do make tons of clicking sounds as you reel as the anti reverse mechanism is designed that way.

These are decent reels. They hate the get isn't fair. I have an original 300 and a new 300 (not the Pro), and a different Mitchell from the late 80s or early 90s. All catch's fish just fine.

I regularly carry the new 300 with me. The original may be bulletproof but I'd rarely grab that one over the new one. I doubt the new Mitchell's will last 60 years like the old ones, but then again very few of the modern reels will.

This is a good deal. Just remember the 300 is the Standard size, the 308 is smaller. I think closer to a Shimano 2500.
