The reviews are accurate. The problem with this unit is that it will likely arrive damaged.

Regardless of the reviews, last summer I was in desperate need and ordered one from Amazon. Sure enough, as I helped the UPS driver yank it off the truck, I could tell it traveled over a rough road. Root cause: the packaging offers adequate protection for transporting a bag of socks but certainly not a large consumer appliance… just thin cardboard and maybe inch of foam on the base and the top corners. No padding. I kid you not. Ten-dollar toasters ship in a better packaging.

Amazon issued a full refund and neither wanted to replace it nor have me return it.
Banged up it is, yet by luck, its air tight and works well. It sits in the basement and serves a purpose, so the cosmetics are a non-issue for me.

Based on the posts I've read from several e-tailer sites, I believe they arrived from China unscathed as they are transported in mass quantities on a pallet. When the pallet arrives at your local Costco all is good. Its only problematic when shipping an individual unit. I don't fault the final delivery. The logistics are broken.
I would spend a bit more getting an upright freezer make your life a lot easier. I owned a chess freezer and most of the time it is a pain to dig things from the bottom of the freezer or if not it will just sit there forever.
In for one so I can tell others I have a Koolatron

Here the online order comes with free delivery. If you buy it from a local Costco store, do they deliver it for you?

No, they won't deliver it to you when you buy in store hence the price differential you typically see for items of this nature located in store vs. shipped.

Can these things run in a cold garage? Not sure if I can justify the space in the house or not.

EDIT: The Danby, while dopey-sounding, is 'garage ready', which from my 30 second google search shows me that this means it should be ok in a cold garage, but could cause more wear/tear on the components. (Garage Ready: Freezer can perform in temperatures from 0F to 110F (-17C to 43C) )
I'm seriously considering the Danby [costco.com] as it's garage ready and offers 5 year manufacturer warranty + Citi CostCo extended warranty.

Ordered the Danby and received it earlier this week damaged like many of the reviews stated. Now waiting for my replacement that's suppose to show up Friday. Hopefully we won't have the same problem.

I don't know what makes one garage ready. I have bought over a dozen of these chest type freezers from different makes. They seem to be very similarly made if not from the same factory. They all have operated in garage spaces, indoors, hot garages, cold garages and sheds. So I wouldn't look at that as a requirement before putting it somewhere.

Bought the Danby around last Christmas time (for a higher price though, lol any chance I would get a credit from Costco?).
So far so good, it is considered garage ready, has a nice finish.
The only minor thing is the door has a strong spring, so when closing it be careful not to just let it go - it will slam down...

I keep a freezer in the garage in Iowa weather no problem and temps here get to -20F or worse in winter and summers reach 110F. I also have friends that use their old fridges in the garage as well. None of us ever had a problem. another friend that keeps a fridge in the garage in Vegas so extreme heat. Mine has been running strong for over 10 years. I don't think you will have a problem putting it in the garage at all.

Costco is very sly how they charge shipping for items on there website. instead of charging shipping they just make the price higher online then in store... doesn't go for all items but some to most...one thing I will say usamsclub beat them in.. they don't charge shipping or mark there prices up online... they exactly show you in club price and online price side by side
