Regardless of the reviews, last summer I was in desperate need and ordered one from Amazon. Sure enough, as I helped the UPS driver yank it off the truck, I could tell it traveled over a rough road. Root cause: the packaging offers adequate protection for transporting a bag of socks but certainly not a large consumer appliance… just thin cardboard and maybe inch of foam on the base and the top corners. No padding. I kid you not. Ten-dollar toasters ship in a better packaging.
Amazon issued a full refund and neither wanted to replace it nor have me return it.
Banged up it is, yet by luck, its air tight and works well. It sits in the basement and serves a purpose, so the cosmetics are a non-issue for me.
Based on the posts I've read from several e-tailer sites, I believe they arrived from China unscathed as they are transported in mass quantities on a pallet. When the pallet arrives at your local Costco all is good. Its only problematic when shipping an individual unit. I don't fault the final delivery. The logistics are broken.

EDIT: The Danby, while dopey-sounding, is 'garage ready', which from my 30 second google search shows me that this means it should be ok in a cold garage, but could cause more wear/tear on the components. (Garage Ready: Freezer can perform in temperatures from 0F to 110F (-17C to 43C) )
