The reviews are accurate. The problem with this unit is that it will likely arrive damaged.

Regardless of the reviews, last summer I was in desperate need and ordered one from Amazon. Sure enough, as I helped the UPS driver yank it off the truck, I could tell it traveled over a rough road. Root cause: the packaging offers adequate protection for transporting a bag of socks but certainly not a large consumer appliance… just thin cardboard and maybe inch of foam on the base and the top corners. No padding. I kid you not. Ten-dollar toasters ship in a better packaging.

Amazon issued a full refund and neither wanted to replace it nor have me return it.
Banged up it is, yet by luck, its air tight and works well. It sits in the basement and serves a purpose, so the cosmetics are a non-issue for me.

Based on the posts I've read from several e-tailer sites, I believe they arrived from China unscathed as they are transported in mass quantities on a pallet. When the pallet arrives at your local Costco all is good. Its only problematic when shipping an individual unit. I don't fault the final delivery. The logistics are broken.
I would spend a bit more getting an upright freezer make your life a lot easier. I owned a chess freezer and most of the time it is a pain to dig things from the bottom of the freezer or if not it will just sit there forever.
In for one so I can tell others I have a Koolatron

My local Costco has Media brand 7 cu ft for $159. Los Angeles
My local Costco had the same price in Ohio. But I went with Danby just a week ago for $249.99. I've requested a price adjustment for it.

Thanks OP. Bought the Danby. Been waiting for a good deal on chest freezer from a reputable store and you can't get much better than Costco, if at all.

I went with the Danby because it had better reviews, and a lifetime satisfaction guarantee. Delivers Monday!

I've been looking for a deep freezer since last year and either they are always sold out, an outrageous price, pickup only, or $100+ delivery fee. I've been waiting for a year for a decent price and free delivery. This is perfect!

For those of your without a Costco membership, you can still buy with a 5% non-member surcharge. I picked up the Danby 7.2 and a 15$ fee was added for non-member. For a decent price on an in-stock freezer and free delivery to room I'm happy to pay that.

As long as the chest freezer is relatively small, say 5-7 cu. ft., that problem doesn't exist. Bigger ones will get more and more unmanageable, I agree.

The Danby doesn't appear to be Energy Star rated - for those that care.
If you click the Specifications tab on the product page in the table it lists:

totally disagree. I have a 7cf one and it is a pain in the ass to get at stuff that is at the bottom. However as an upright is nearly twice the price, i just bitch about it as i do it.. :-)

I bought a upright 13 cu.ft Frigidaire from Home Depot for $498 in last August. If you factor in the foods that might be wasted on the bottom of the chest freezer and your time digging out foods. It worth the price.

Can these things run in a cold garage? Not sure if I can justify the space in the house or not.

EDIT: The Danby, while dopey-sounding, is 'garage ready', which from my 30 second google search shows me that this means it should be ok in a cold garage, but could cause more wear/tear on the components. (Garage Ready: Freezer can perform in temperatures from 0F to 110F (-17C to 43C) )
I've got my chest freezer in garage. No problems in summer. I did recently also buy a stand up freezer because we buy so many things for freezer that just dumping them into a chest freezer isn't great for organization even if you tidy it up. I just keep both for now in my garage but will eventually sell the chest one

Uprights are at least three times the cost of a chest freezer. I guess it depends how you use one. If I'm buying a bunch of meat to store, 5 bags of tomatoes from the garden, etc, then I think a chest works fine. If it's something you use daily, then yeah, uprights are definitely nicer. The other thing that sucks about the chest freezers is that it's dead space in the garage, as you can't pile on top of it.

I have a Kenmore 17 cu ft. frost free and glass shelves. I bought it 13 years ago, and when it dies I plan on getting another just like it or with at least frost free and glass shelves.
