I'd say the big reason is that these are one use bags. You seal it with included stickers (with some fun messages on them) and Once you take the sandwich out, you don't really ever reseal the bag, so what's the point of a zip lock bag? We used these for years when my kids were going to school with bag lunches, and they never had an issue with them. I think we just need to change our mindset when it comes to single use plastics. If you can go without using plastics, just do it. there's no downside, unless you're taking sandwiches kayaking and need a fully sealed bag. That said, we eventually opted for reusable plastic hard containers that lasted for years.... Is buying these going to save the planet from certain disaster? No. Is it a good idea to be cognizant of your plastic use on a daily basis and thus change consumer image through free trade choice? Yes.
That's sort of a "Other than that, how was the play, Mrs Lincoln?" comment. The environmental friendliness (real or perceived) is much the point.

In any case, you can safely microwave in these, and certain things that would stick to plastic would not stick here.
If we really want to get serious about the environment, how about not buying disposable and by reusable sandwich bags? Ikea has them for CHEAP

Nevermind the environment and what not for a moment. Functionally speaking, is there any reason to get these over sandwich ziploc?

Really worried about the environment with single use items!?? Give me a break. Go buy a damn sandwich sized tupaware and use it everyday for the rest of your life.

Why over the ziplock ?
Because these breath a bit. They keep things fresher without going moldly as fast.
Just like a good butcher or cheese shop will use.
And ever hear of endocrine disrupters in plastic ?

The wax paper bags keep things tighter (if that makes sense).
For example in plastic bags i usually wrap it in foil or a paper towel before putting it in the bag, with these they just go straight in.

Seems like non-sealable sandwich bags are more economical with less waste than ziploc. $1.62 for 200 @ Wally World
