Your manual should specify how much oil your engine takes. If you are doing more work on your car I always suggest getting a Haynes or Chilton's manual for on hand reference when you are getting dirty (tablets and phones are not as much fun when you are in deep).

If you don't have that you can look it up online, ex https://shop.advanceautoparts.com...y-car-need small cars need 4-4.5 quarts and normal larger cars need 5 quarts. Some specialty engines need 6-8 quarts. If you know exactly how much your car needs you will save a lot of time just dumping that amount. A lot of time is comparative to checking the dipstick often as I described above.

Your car manual will tell you how much oil to use and if your dipsticks are full or close to it just drain it and pour back into some old containers and find out how much you took out and then put the same amount back in.
