I'm somewhat going to disagree. I had a bunch of amcrest cameras and while they work great at first almost like clock work they failed about 14 months in. Right outside of the warranty date.
My answer is anecdotal as I can only relay my own experiences. I have over 40 cameras installed at my home, most of the them older Hikvisions. Over time, I've replaced many of them with the Amcrest 1179's. I'm up to about a dozen or so, and have had them for no more than 2 years. So I cannot comment on their long-term quality/reliability. But, given that these are just private labeled Dahua cameras, I'm hopeful the durability will be there.

That looks pretty good. Do you think the Dahua 5442s everyone raves about are worth the extra $$$ over the 1179s? I know the sensor is bigger, but I can't see how the night vision could get much better...
I do not know about the 5442. I have a prior generation Dahua IPC-HFW4431R-Z which also has the motorized 2.7 to 12mm lens. I use it as a license plate recognition camera, and it has been rock solid for over 3 years.

I also have the Dahua SD59225 PTZ with auto tracking for 3 years, and it too has been a great (but pricey) camera.

The 1179's are mind-blowingly capable for the price. I'm trying to avoid Amazon, and I needed more, so I just ordered some from Home Depot (same price as Amazon and free shipping)...

Thanks! In the process of buying our first house. Right now we have Arlo cams, but I definitely want to go wired in the new house and the 1179s do seem hard to beat value-wise. Will probably be running Surveillance Station on my Synology NAS.

I read that you can actually install the Dahua firmware on the 1179s and unlock even more features. Have you tried that?

HI @lordkev

If you're still in the process of building your first home, you still have time to wire properly.. check out the cliff notes at ipcamtalk on the topic, and various threads on the topic there.

Over cable while it is cheap.. Wink

Hi spaceistheplace

Reolink is disliked by many Blue Iris fans at ipcamtalk

I'd avoid it if you want to go with Blue Iris. Too many issues.

Got it. Any equivalent in terms of features of the 810? It's a 4K cam with very good image quality. Looks like their firmware sucks. Any Amcrest or dahua ? Really wanna upgrade to 4K with reasonable night vision

HI @spaceistheplace...

"Any equivalent in terms of features of the 810?" - Reolinks do poorly in low light conditions.
"Really wanna upgrade to 4K with reasonable night vision.."

Look for Dahua OEM or Hikvision OEM cameras that have 1/1.8" 8MP sensors or better for good low light performance for a 8MP camera. Yes, it will cost you more... as the entire camera has more expensive components, larger lens, larger sensor, better DSP chips,...

Hi Matt,

I've been trying to research cameras for the past month and each time I think I've found something I'd like to buy, I learn about something new that the camera lacks. You're the resident expert on SD and while I was searching for previous deals on here, I saw your post around black friday where you shared a few systems that you would recommend to your family.

I am wondering if you have a any systems on your mind right now that you would recommend to your friends/family? It has been frustrating researching camera systems and I am about ready to give up. I need a 6 camera out of the box plug and play poe system (meaning NVR, I will get a blue iris system at a later time once I learn more) for under $1000. Hopefully something with 1/1.8 sensor and listen in mic. Would really appreciate your input!

Yes, actually I did just that this week. I was able to load the Dahua firmware on to the 1179. No downside that I've found. Was very straight forward. I did try to roll back to Amcrest firmware to see if it would work, and it does not. So if you do opt for Dahua, realize that without some non-standard approach, you likely will not be able to restore it back to Amcrest (i.e. warranty void?).

Hi Aleactoric,

I currently do not know of a kit with 1/1.8" sensors I would recommend for my friends / family that is on a deal.

I know the Dahua OEM products better than the Hikvision products ( Annke often has Hikvision OEM .. though not 100% certain all the Annke camera's are hikvision ).

If you can take a little time, perhaps just pickup 1-2 IP PoE cameras and a small poe switch and start playing with them to get to know this topic better.

see the reviews at ipcamtalk - most members there are very good and that's where I learned a lot.

Thanks for your response. Do you have a system in mind that is not on a deal? I looked into Dahua and wasn't sure where to buy. Found some cameras on bhphoto video and those were kind of expensive. There is too much info and it's kind of overwhelming. I will take a look on ipcamtalk. Thanks again!

Hi aleatoric

Yes it is overwhelming.

If you have time, just pickup one good long cat5e/6 cable with copper wires, a small poe switch, and a Amcrest 5MP turret camera with a 3.6mm lens - and start playing with it.

Blue Iris has a demo version you play with, or Dahua OEM SmartPSS

If you can afford a pricier camera look for a 4MP Dahua OEM camera with a varifocal lens and 1/1.8:" sensor and compare and contrast with the Amcrest.

If you use Blue Iris you can also compare and contrast some of the Annke models with those above.

That's probably the best path for me... thank you!
