Neutral wire provides power to the switch when it's off so it can still be controlled via your phone, Alexa, etc. Some switches work without it, but this one doesn't.

Also just a note, the neutral and ground are not the same thing.

Is lack of ground common in modern homes, or just older homes?

It says "Three modes - Schedule, Timer, and Away"

Does that mean you can't use it as a normal switch if you wanted to? Like say I put it in a bedroom and I wanted it on until I finish reading something, when I would be turn it off from my phone or something. Can I do that, or does it have to be on a schedule or timer?

You can always use it as a normal switch.

Older. I think the general rule is if your house was built or rewired in the 80s, you should have wiring with neutrals. My house (built in 40s) has a combination.
