I can't remember if it was on SD's thread on the Dyson or an amazon review, but the commenter said that, yes the $200 (on sale) Dyson was about 10% faster drying than another well-reviewed $30 dryer she also had.
That convinced me that most dryers are going to be pretty similar. That shouldn't be surprising, as they all blow hot air. The differences are going to be in the attachments, ergonomics (some have poorly placed switches or attachments that fall off) and some have DC motors that are SLIGHTLY less noisy.
Though I was ready to spend the $200, I ended up getting 3 that all had good reviews but the shapes and attachments were different. She ended up liking the one linked below that had a stubby nozzle and came with lots of attachments.

I have 2 different models of Elchim dryers and I'll never buy any other brand again. I have long, thick hair which takes forever to dry with an ordinary dryer, but I'm done completely in less than 10 minutes with my Elchim's. I cannot attest to this model but the two models I have (3800 & 3900) are by far the best dryers I've ever used. Plus I've always used professional grade dryers. Forgot to mention that my hair looks great with this dryer because it uses heat instead of blowing your hair all over the place creating frizz.
Also this hair dryer is 1800 watts, and may jump your circuit if the circuit already has some loads.
Elchim is the best the difference between this one 3001 (white) and the classic red one (I think 2000) is the 3001 is a more compact size. It's really pretty too, it's a pearlescent white
