Just stopped by Lowes. They have 5-gallon buckets of Valspar 4000 Eggshell Interior and Valspar 4000 Flat Ceiling paint on clearance. The Eggshell is $29.60, usually $69, and the ceiling paint is $26, usually $65. Looks like the items went on clearance yesterday. It is NOT TINTABLE. Be careful that you grab the right buckets, they had several different product numbers all jumbled together, they all look alike, and at first I grabbed the wrong one.

Why can't you tint it
I asked - twice - if you can tint it. Was told if the bucket doesn't say tintable, it's not tintable. I would LOVE to have been able to tint it. I'm just guessing, but it's probably just a result of the formula they use to make the paint to make it "high hide" paint etc.

It may not be the same reason this one isn't tintable, but I recently learned that a lot of the reason why the tintable ones have certain colors that can be achieved with cans labeled as say "Base A" vs "Base B" has to do with how much room they leave empty in the can that ends up getting filled up with the tint. Some colors require more tint to achieve and have to use a corresponding base that has enough room in the can. These may not be tintable simply because they are intended to be basic low cost bargain paint and the cans are full leaving no room for much tint. Their premium color palette lines come with the premium price. Just a hunch.

I bought some Valspar recently to paint our laundry room and noticed while shopping the selection of 'ceiling paint' they also had.

Is this special paint, meaning its 'less likely to drip back into your hair' or does it have some other properties I'm unaware of? (I didnt buy any - its a small room and seemed a gimmick)

So far as ceiling paint the one I like to use the most is Eminence from Sherwin Williams, with account it comes out to around $20 per gallon. Home Depot used to have 2gal Behr but they changed formula more than a year ago and now it's $hit with overlaps seen even without light shining. Eminence might take two coats but it's slightly thicker consistency so doesn't drip too much and comes out as very clean and true flat with no overlap lines or different shades.

So, in summary...is 'ceiling paint' thicker? Always flat /no gloss? What exactly makes it different, regardless of brand.

Not exactly. The amount of tint that goes in the can is not that much for either dark or light tinted colors. The Different bases are different 'shades' of white tintable material. For light colors, you need a very light white base to get a light color to tint properly. For darker tint colors, the base doesn't need to be that super white before tinting. You will not be able to tint an off-white base - as used for darker tints - a very light tinted color. So somehow they are saving money by having two tintable bases, I presume limiting the amount of super white base which is more costly to waste on dark colors.

Ceiling paint is cheaper, thinner no-frill paint. It doesn't need to cover the previous color (so it isn't made to). It doesn't need to be scrubbable for fingerprints (so it isn't), etc.

I hope that helps explain the difference.

This paint is horrible coverage/hide, if its something you don't care about like a shed, then that fine.

Got it before it was on sale, after the painters left you could see the spots/marks, you will waste labor and time I had to call them back and redo it (costed me more). Just, get good paint do it once and be done with it.
