Just seeing this is back again. Not sure how it's not getting more rep? This is a pretty crazy good deal imo. You get this and the $100 rebate for $900 plus any tax.
The video card is about to be a gen behind so you're not getting ray tracing or DLSS, but still getting the 5600m which is a little better than a 1660ti, a 1TB SSD with 16GB memory and a very good CPU for that price is pretty killer. Not to mention a 6 cell battery, AND it lights up all pretty with the per key RGB keyboard!
I bought this the last time it was this price and I honestly don't game much on PC so can't say much about it there, but a couple of things I have noticed is that it has a great wireless connection in comparison to my other laptops, and the speakers are loud but have no bass or fullness to them. Also on a pure black screen I have noticeable light bleed at the top/corners of the screen. If anyone has any other random questions not related to gaming with this, I can try and answer.
light bleed from newegg purchase .normal...expect restocking fee at newegg
light bleed at costco purchase, not acceptable. free returns 90 days.
I buy rice cookers, mini bluetooth speaker, newegg flash mini coffee press....but not expensive laptops or computers or TV. I been through neweggs return policy and restocking fee for defective items before.

How is it for general day to day computing use (e-mail, word processing, browsing, YouTube)? Looking to buy it for an older family member who needs a desktop replacement for a 12-year old computer.

It's great but so is pretty much any decent laptop these days. If they have a 12 year old desktop even a $500 laptop these days will outperform it. Just make sure they have enough hard drive space if they store a lot of files like pictures or movies on their computer. If they aren't going to be playing any games or doing anything with photoshop or video editing or anything like that, I would save a few hundred dollars and go with something cheaper.
I guess on the upside this has a 6 cell battery so if they want to use it unplugged it'll last longer than some cheap laptops but on the other hand you could still get something pretty good and a good bit lighter and/or thinner than this laptop (this one weighs just over 5 pounds) that weighs a pound or more less than this. A pound or so doesn't seem like much but if you're carrying it around and actually using it as a laptop you're going to notice it.

Thanks, how about build quality? I've just noticed that those cheaper $500 laptop these days feel pretty flimsy and I don't have the confidence they would last as long (this family member kept their current desktop for 12 years). I assume they would want to get some longevity out of this one as well.

Edit: I am sorry. $799 is the correct price after 10% discount code.

Hopefully this year AMD laptops will have USB4 (40Gb/s, sames Thunderbolt 3/4).
