Where did you get that for $120? That's a great deal and better than this one. Synology has their own camera apps too and a whole stable ecosystem to work with.

This is a fairly old NAS, probably not worth the $80 price tag IMHO. However, if you have some computer/linux skills and manage to install Debian OS to it, it can become a fun toybox -- just imagine it as a somehow underpowered raspberry pi with a built-in RAID chassis.

I have a number of kirkwood-based Buffalo LS-WVL and armada-370-based Buffalo LS220 all installed with Debian Buster. I installed OpenMediaVault to manage the storage and storage-related services (Samba, NFS, FTP etc.). Moreover, I was able to run my own DHCP server, DNS server, as well as Transmission deamon etc. Just be gentle and avoid too CPU-intensive work -- PLEX server is possible but will be too much -- and you'll be fine.

Came here to say the same thing. Synology's ecosystem of apps and features makes this Buffalo NAS look like a toy. Don't waste your money on it, also because it's only 90 day warranty. If you really don't want to fork the money for a Synology, and have an old desktop PC laying around, use Xpenology:

Just a FYI;

I have been playing with Xpenology for many years, finally got frustrated with odd issues and bought a Synology DS218J from Amazon Warehouse for $120. The Synology has been going strong for 2 years without failure and I have upgraded to DSM 7.x

I also have a Dell Inspiron 3252 with a Pentium N3700 4GB ram running Xpenology. The hardware PC works great (low power consumption, quite, quick, more expandable than the DS218) but...........

The PC booting Xpenology will not upgrade past DSM 6.2.1 step2, and "acts" a little weird. I have run into these issue before with other non-synology hardware.

Yeah, I'd pass on this enclosure and it's "dual issue CPU"

Xpenology is really cool. Ran it on an HP micro server a few years ago. It was mostly solid but occasionally twitchy and I ultimately didn't feel comfortable trusting it for mission critical data.

I'd recommend OpenMediaVault + XFS over DSM for PC. Xpenology is in a gray area in terms of ©️ and support, whereas OMV is genuinely open source.

I;ve been using OMV for 5 years and I don't really like it. The all in one install is kinda buggy in that you can run into issues if you want to add more apps on the box since its dependent on the repo OMV is running on. Also don't install it on a usb disk, it seems to destroy them from excessive writes every 14 months.

The best I found was installing Debian server on the PC and than throwing OMV on top. However, I can't complain too much since I have been using it for 5 yrs and I can't see a strong reason to not use it for another 5. I wish it had better integration with DLA streaming or camera NVR software, but can't really complain for a free product.

Yup agreed. I shall clarify that my order of installation is Debian - XFS - OMV instead of OMV all-in-one image.

TrueNas user here. Occasionally, Amazon Warehouse has refurbed Intel 4-Bay QNAP or Synology Nases for $250. Also last Summer I was able to get an refurbed HP Gen 10 Server for $300. I put Truenas on it and its been solid.
