Guys, be careful. I am currently stuck in the warranty process for this router.

The speed is stuck at max RPM, the display is frozen and none of the buttons are responsive. Of course I tried unplugging and plugging back in several times. I asked in the amazon questions if there was a way to reset it, but Skil said no.

The first time I bought this, it worked for maybe 3 times before it got stuck. Luckily, I was within the amazon return period, so I got a replacement.

The second time, I used it a single time before I had the same problem. Unfortunately, I was out of the Amazon return period.

So I contacted Skil customer service and filed a warranty claim. They said they'd send a replacement unit and a pre paid shipping label. It's now been almost a month since they said this and I've seen neither of them. I called today and the lady said there was a shipping delay and that IT HADN'T BEEN SHIPPED OUT YET. Almost one month later, they haven't shipped out a replacement.

Now, this stuck-at-max-rpm problem didn't happen to me while I while I was using a bit. I don't know if this will happen while you're using a large diameter bit and make it explode.

The first time I spoke with them, I asked them if they were aware of the problem and they said no. Even though if you check the reviews for this item ont heir website, there is at least one review describing this exact problem.

Edit: in case anyone cares, a new router was delivered today. We'll see how long it lasts...

The Craftsman professional routers had the prefix 320 (Chervon HK Limited Group), meaning Chervon made the Craftsman Professional routers for Craftsman. Chervon is the owner of Skil.

Hard to say if the componentry is the same or not, but I wouldn't be surprised to see that they just carried over a lot of the same parts to keep costs down.

I've had a Craftsman Professional 320 28190 (non-plunge 2 1/4 HP) router for years. It has been an absolutely stellar tool and is my go-to for the majority of the work I do.
Most definitely being made in the same spot in China as the similar Craftsman routers (#50429 for example). Not that this is such a bad thing. I have a couple of those, which look *almost identical*, sans the digitial display, and they've been great. But Sears screwed folks on available baseplates, as in stopped selling them. Maybe Skil could be a source there..?

Skil: The Router preferred by 9 out of 10 "Mission Impossible" Operatives, (due to how easily it explodes, 20 seconds after opening).

Apparently not. Oh well, still tempting as my first router.
You will HATE this router as a first router.

However, any router you will get after this, will seem like it was made by an advanced civilization on the other side of the galaxy!

You'd be better off buying an old used craftsman lol. Skil is known as the worst router in history. Harbor Freight has better choices.

Not trying to be rude but seems like they have some QC issues. A recurring theme is that the collet is not actually .5 inches rather somewhere between .46in and .48in. Another recurring issue is that the buttons seem to just fail completely or intermittently which on a router can be dangerous or expensive depending on what you're working on. Just so you know to check your tool when you get it. Apparently customer service has issues at times as well but I myself have not run into that yet with skil.

I have the Craftsman versions of this and it looks 100% identical, and mine is 12 years old. I use it only occasionally but it always works fine.

I need a router for a project that involves cutting a kerf into the bottom of a barn door. What else would I use this for as a general DIYer? In other words, should I buy this or borrow one? Thanks!

Hard to answer that - I suppose if I were doing woodwork on a semi-frequent basis, a router is a nice tool to have since it can be used for a lot of joinery tasks, cutting/facing wood, drilling holes, engraving, etc. Some things can be done with other power tools....things like edging and profiling are very difficult to do without a router.

If none of those things sound interesting, I would borrow.

I think it's important to note that router bits can be a big investment and are kind of an unseen cost. Specialized router bits from Freud, Whiteside, Infinity, etc can easily cost more than the router.

I've used both (I think - I have a Craftsman router that looks verrrrry similar to this). It's about the same. I returned the Metabo because of some small issue I can't remember, and I've stuck with the Craftsman since I got a fixed and plunge base for under $100. It does everything I need it to. Maybe not as intuitive as more expensive routers, but as long as I never use an expensive router, I don't have to think about it.
cool thanks for the input, watching the videos and reviews I think I'd prefer one without a digital control pad

I do a lot of woodworking and reading about woodworking. Skil brand has been getting attention as of late for their upgraded tools. If you ever considered a router, jump on this.

I have the Bosch 1617. I'm going to order this and see how they compare.
My Bosch was destined for my custom 40 x40" CNC machine, but I may put this in it's place and keep the Bosch for hand held use. I'll try to remember to update this post once I get it and see how they differ.

This deal runs for the rest of the month (3/31/21) in case anyone is worried about missing a short deal.
Where does a person start that knows little about CNC machines?

I can't be the only one that is curious beyond buying a ready to go model that would certainly put a dent in the bank account for what would otherwise be a hobby. The price, like most technology does seem to be coming down, but have no idea what a bargain is.

I own 2 of these routers. One for my handheld things, one in my router table. They are a great value. I have not had any issues and they work great.
What table is that? I own the Menards Masterforce version of this set and there is no table I have found that it will mate with the predrilled mounting holes. I have seen tables with clamp on styles used for these, but those do not have positive placement, so no thank you. Skil, Craftsman, Masterforce, all are clones.
