Better than BOGO because you can enjoy the free drink yourself
Add shots of espresso / extra pumps of syrup Woot
Most expensive one I made was like $7.30. I figure you could get to $10, but it would be hella nasty.

Am I missing something here, or is their main business based on purchases of hot brewed coffee or tea, Starbucks Reserve® beverages, or ready-to-drink beverages.

I think "hot brewed" is just their cheapest plain cup of coffee like you'd brew at home. It's like $2.50.

No, their main business is from "handcrafted" drinks like espresso-based ones, fraps and custom iced drinks, as well as beans. "Coffee" means just that, poured brewed coffee, that doesn't involve pulling espresso shots. Tea is hot water and a packet, and iced tea is also ready-made. They make WAY more money from drinks that are more involved to make.

That said, I don't know when was the last time I actually paid for a Starbucks drink since they ended sit-down service due to the pandemic nearly a year ago. The only times I go to one these days is to redeem stars, usually on drinkware, sometimes on food, very rarely on actual drinks. In the past I've usually only gotten those when I plan to sit down a while and do some work. With Panera's continuous free coffee offers, I don't see the point, especially since you can usually sit and stay at a Panera's. The coffee's not as good, of course, but a seat's a seat.

I gave my kid to customize his drink. Trust me it's fairly close to it

I think I hit $8 once with a venti frappuccino with extra shots, syrups and a banana for a free drink. Turned out okay but I certainly couldn't finish it.

You can come close, my wife and I usually share a venti caramel macchiato, oatmilk, 2 extra shots of expresso. Comes out to around $9.
