Many years ago houses were wired with BX cable that had a metal jacket around it. This jacket was grounded at the panel box. The outlet boxes were also metal and therefore automatically grounded when connected to the BX. As you can see from the picture this receptacle has a metal strip connected to the grounding screw. If you attach it to a metal outlet box which is grounded it will be grounded. If the box is not metal or not grounded it won't help.
