I have this and the RX-V6A that replaces it.

The TSR-7850 model has nicer on screen controls.
The TSR-7850 has a remove that feel more premium and heavy but is less well designed. The RX-V6A remote is better laid out but feels cheap and plasticky.
The new RX-V6A supposedly has issues with passing 4K/120Hz through it. I just send the images to the TV and use eARC to send the sound from the TV to the receiver. Problem solved.
For the TSR-7850 there are two apps you can use to control the device, each doing different things. For the RX-V6A, they tried to combine them into one and the execution is not good. (Either way the phone control of setting is a huge improvement over using the on screen controls. It is nice to make changes without interrupting what you are watching.

I don't feel that the newer version offers anything worth spending more money for.

Just a general gripe here on the industry (love Yahama sound equipment):

If you're going to go for atmos / DTS X etc., you really need the four elevated (or at least directed) channels to get good 3D imaging/vectoring of the object-based sound. People & publishers that take the time to do back-to-back room-calibrated tests with good tracks confirm this. Why we are 8 YEARS into Atmos receivers and still so many X.X.2 receivers from the industry? How much does it really cost to move to X.X.4? Just seems like such an unnecessary handicap. DTSX/Atmos provide such a significant enhancement to surround sound, to add all the technology to the receiver but forget about the two extra effect channels to make it really work is just asinine. Thank you marketing departments!

(IMO: If you want to really use atmos/DTSX, wait for a refurb deal <$400 on a 5.2.4 capable unit, instead of dropping almost as much money on a partial-implementation of a great technology!)

What if you have multiple devices that make use of 4k/120Hz? I know a lot of TVs have one or two ports with only one being 4k/120Hz capable. I guess a 4k switch could be used, but those seem to be iffy for passing 4k/120Hz too?

Yamaha doesn't come out with new receivers every year. This model came out in 2018 and was sold into late 2020. It was replaced at Costco by the TSR-700 ($330 on sale) before Black Friday 2020.

You can blame covid-19. The supply chain was impacted heavily.
These probably haven't been produced in at least a year, maybe longer. Refurb also means it went out to a customer and came back. I'm guessing the higher price is simply because there aren't very many of these left. Not covid

I kind of meant more other manufacturers...with all the issues right now with earc and hdmi 2.1 i can see denon and sony putting out variant models because I don't think firmware will fix all the issues

In response to those people lamenting the lack of full pre-outs and .4 Atmos... the industry knows its customers. People who have under $500 to spend on an AV are generally not the same people looking for full pre-outs and .4 Atmos. I sure am not and I'm glad I have the option of a good (but maybe not great) 7.2 system for $300.

I'm with you on this. I would not upgrade to a 2020 model and I would only buy older models if they were cheap, which this is not. If I didn't have an AV I might consider this, but I'd try to pick up a good used one locally first. If there is one thing that people are always selling in vast quantities it's AVs. They are the electronic equivalent of exercise machines.

Minor point at this point there I think 1 or 2 games (one for each console) that do 4k @120. I think end of the year will be here before that changes most will only do 4k @120. Most tvs that aren't like this year or last year's models won't support 120. I have a series 3 tcl and out of luck that being said. Can anyone rep a 4k @120 switch?

I too bought this last year when I made the shift to 4K, and I love it. My mini review:

Other than a small refurbished sticker I wouldn't have known it wasn't new.

My use case is Shield 2017, Xbox One X, Switch, and airplay. HDR and dolby vision work great passing through, and hdmi switching/HDCP is always solid.

Pro tip: I spent waaaay too long figuring out why a nice used svs sub I bought didn't seem to thump when connected. Seems like lots of yamahas have low sub output, which can be resolved by bumping the subwoofer trim setting somewhere between +1-3db. Made all the difference.

If I were buying now, I'd have a tough time deciding. This costs a lot for a refurb receiver, but it's going to be that way through most of this year. So how soon do you need it? Tough call about waiting for a sale on a newer model not knowing if it will come back, and whether you're willing to roll the dice with the new hdmi 2.1 models that are still flakey af waiting on stable firmware that supports the new features.

I've got a couple of 6-7 year-old AVRs with '4K Ready" stickers on them, that I'm having trouble getting $20 for on Craiglist, because they're not HDCP 2.2 .

I think about them whenever I read folks posts about buying a 'Future Proof' receiver.

tsr-700 is removed from website. I think it was discontinued most likely a holiday special. I called all stores around me and noone had it. In NYC metro so alot of costcos here none had them.
It goes in and out last few months on the Costco site.

Keep checking if you are interested in it. Was available last few days along with the Onkyo.

I got two of theTSR-700s from Costco. Both failed in different ways within 2 weeks. Now I'm afraid of Yamaha 😔

btw, I absolutely loved them while they worked. I'd even try another from Costco if they were still on sale for$330.
So when all those TSR-700 returns/refurbs Do hit the market they should be selling for like $220....

Totally get this receiver is for the usual crowd and it might have not been the best place to post however I can't seem to find high end 2-3 year old receivers that do have full pre-outs on OfferUp....but having just said that I'm probably looking at the wrong area and should be looking on forums.

I'm not worried about the .4 but I do have 3 two channel Carver amps with some old HT speakers that sound great but had an older ONKYO TX-NR801 receiver from back in the day that had full pre-outs but now that everything is wireless/bluetooth/spotify enabled receivers, looking for something more modern. Is it unreasonable to think one could be had for 300-500?

Exactly, if you have speakers so good that the receiver is a big factor, you would not be shopping for $330 receivers on Slickdeals. However, they do sound great.
I understand what you are saying but some folks who just start out have just start out products after spending time doing some research and deciding on the products. So then Slickdeals seem to be a good place to see and read on stuff you're interested in and save some money in the process. Thanks for answering the question too.

Yeah, it's amazing how cheap nice older receivers go for on Craigslist. I just snagged a few nice midgrade Yamaha and Onkyo models for peanuts.

The sound quality, mostly, will depend on your speakers. Sure, some receivers are known to be better for movies or music and can be described as "bright". In the end, it's your speakers which determine the quality, and knowing how much power they need.
True. I actually replaced a 10 year old Yamaha RXA3000 that was considerably more expensive with this one and I can't tell any difference in sound quality.
