I have this and the RX-V6A that replaces it.

The TSR-7850 model has nicer on screen controls.
The TSR-7850 has a remove that feel more premium and heavy but is less well designed. The RX-V6A remote is better laid out but feels cheap and plasticky.
The new RX-V6A supposedly has issues with passing 4K/120Hz through it. I just send the images to the TV and use eARC to send the sound from the TV to the receiver. Problem solved.
For the TSR-7850 there are two apps you can use to control the device, each doing different things. For the RX-V6A, they tried to combine them into one and the execution is not good. (Either way the phone control of setting is a huge improvement over using the on screen controls. It is nice to make changes without interrupting what you are watching.

I don't feel that the newer version offers anything worth spending more money for.
Just a general gripe here on the industry (love Yahama sound equipment):

If you're going to go for atmos / DTS X etc., you really need the four elevated (or at least directed) channels to get good 3D imaging/vectoring of the object-based sound. People & publishers that take the time to do back-to-back room-calibrated tests with good tracks confirm this. Why we are 8 YEARS into Atmos receivers and still so many X.X.2 receivers from the industry? How much does it really cost to move to X.X.4? Just seems like such an unnecessary handicap. DTSX/Atmos provide such a significant enhancement to surround sound, to add all the technology to the receiver but forget about the two extra effect channels to make it really work is just asinine. Thank you marketing departments!

(IMO: If you want to really use atmos/DTSX, wait for a refurb deal <$400 on a 5.2.4 capable unit, instead of dropping almost as much money on a partial-implementation of a great technology!)
It's an ok deal. I bought this last year Jan for $259 from woot.

Exactly, if you have speakers so good that the receiver is a big factor, you would not be shopping for $330 receivers on Slickdeals. However, they do sound great.

I understand what you are saying but some folks who just start out have just start out products after spending time doing some research and deciding on the products. So then Slickdeals seem to be a good place to see and read on stuff you're interested in and save some money in the process. Thanks for answering the question too.

I've got a couple of 6-7 year-old AVRs with '4K Ready" stickers on them, that I'm having trouble getting $20 for on Craiglist, because they're not HDCP 2.2 .

I think about them whenever I read folks posts about buying a 'Future Proof' receiver.
Yeah, it's amazing how cheap nice older receivers go for on Craigslist. I just snagged a few nice midgrade Yamaha and Onkyo models for peanuts.

The sound quality, mostly, will depend on your speakers. Sure, some receivers are known to be better for movies or music and can be described as "bright". In the end, it's your speakers which determine the quality, and knowing how much power they need.
True. I actually replaced a 10 year old Yamaha RXA3000 that was considerably more expensive with this one and I can't tell any difference in sound quality.

Aren't these usually about $280 as a refurb?
Hasn't been that price since early pandemic. I remember seeing dealparade selling these on eBay for $250 around May and hesitated, an hour later they raised the price. Ended up paying $329 as that was still the best (and one of the only) reasonably priced options at the time.

I'm planning on adding a theater to my basement next year. 4 ceiling speakers is on my must-have list. But thoughts on 7.2.4 vs 5.2.4? I see some say 7 is overkill and unnecessary, plus it would require an extra amp for the two channels--and a receiver to accomodate--since an 11 channel avr is likely out of my budget
I went through this last year finishing my basement and had exactly the same consideration (by design of the industry of course). I wired / installed the whole room for 7.2.4, but only implemented 5.2.4 because I bought a factory refurb Pioneer Elite VSX-LX303 9.2-Channel Network A/V for $309 shipped directly from pioneer. This receiver has been down to $299 refurb and although I like my yahama 7.2 (non-atmos) upstairs significantly more because certain user interface features are simply better and the room calibration system is better with a parametric eq (and more), the pioneer for HT use is a truly outstanding value. Most of my music listening is still upstairs anyway. I figured I can upgrade to 7.2.4 in a few years if I want to and probably even sell the pioneer for at least 1/2 of what I have in it. So, for now, I have in-wall side channels installed that are non-functioning Smilie

Back to your question: I read a bunch of HT & HD forums and this is what most people agree on, including lots of sound magazines/blogs that have actually gone through the trouble of testing in properly set up home theater environments:

If you want to experience Atmos and DTS:X, then
(best for 3D object / vector-based sound) 7.2.4 > 5.2.4 > 7.2.2 > 5.2.2 (least good for atmos or DTS:X tracks)

How much better is 7.2.4 vs 5.2.4? This is mostly going to come down to your listening environment and seating arrangement. In an ideal setting, it is better, but a properly designed 5.2.4 will be able to deliver the perception of the side channels reasonably accurately. A less ideal/optimal seating arrangement and listening space (breaks in walls, hallways, obstacles, poor distances, poor angles, etc.) will benefit more from the side channels. If you can design your basement HT from scratch, a 5.2.4 system should be VERY good from the listening sweet spot. You can widen this sweet spot a bit by adding the side channels to make a smaller home theater more effective with bit larger effective listening area.

For me, doing it myself, the home theater build cost difference was negligible moving from 5.2.4 to 7.2.4, but the receiver cost difference was 2-3x the refurb pioneer 9.2...so that was the direction I went. Nobody has noticed that the side channels don't work on the system, but then again thanks to covid not many people have had the opportunity.

What about Compared to Yamaha RX-V685 7.2 or Sony STR-DH790 7.2-ch?

Can anyone recommend a receiver a few years old that can be had for a decent price that has full pre-outs? It seems that all the new ones with full pre-outs are very high and price.

Any recommendations?
Yamaha TSR-7810, if you can find a good price on it around $300.

This looks to be an upgrade over the Denon s750h that I just got from a4L but haven't hooked up yet, right? 95w/ch vs. 75? I'm planning on only using it for 5.1 home theater and also stereo for my turntable once everything is settled, and then perhaps expand to 7.2 in the future.

This or a refurb Denon x2600
I had a denon in the same ballpark - I don't remember the model - for a short time but ended up returning and picking up two of these tsr-7850 from Costco. Overall they have been pretty great. To me, the sounds were a bit different between the yamaha and the denon - not necessarily better or worse, just different - and there were some minor differences with the settings calibration - but definitely not enough to justify the better value in the yamaha. I am assuming the Denon refurb is at least a bit more?

I'd read there are display issues with the newer model yamaha at costco, but I would probably give that a shot first and take it back if needed, then get this. It's just hard to beat purchases at Costco. I would guess that if I wanted to, I could still take back my receivers years later for a full refund. It's hard to justify that kind of deal based on any very relatively minor differences in these similar receivers.

That's my 2 cents.

Would you guys recommend using this to power 6 ceiling speakers on different floors (a pair on each of the three floors)? The Crutchfield expert recommended using V6A for 2 zones, and then use the main/surround hookup to make a pseudo zone 2 and 3. I assume it will work with the TSR-7850 too? This will go into the garage and I will eventually buy an additional new receiver for my HT (5.1+) when that happens. Any recommendations on what to buy now and later?
