I'm assuming you've never recorded audio before eh?
Pretty sure the H1 has always been audio-only.
Can't believe I'm the only one who read this and thought H1N "any number" is a bad name for a device.

If he gets a camera and lens, the old c100 with dual pixel autofocus cheap, spend your money on the best lens you can.. with a c100, you dont need one of these. It has its own built in..

As for this model, after a ton of research, I ended up buying an H5 which was amazing for my backup audio. Im not sure if the H1n has the best limiters for volume changes. Its been about 5 years since I did my research so if anyone knows about the limiters on this, let me know how it works.

This is great advice. Best lens and solid audio recorder. I use Pentax my go lens is 50mm 1.7 which I have hooked to a tascam recorder with a shotgun hooked to that.

Would this improve audio quality from a shot gun mic versus going straight into the camera?

It depends. The H1N is omnidirectional but you can plug a lav mic or an unidirectional shotgun mic.

What camera? Most pro cameras have their own audio mixer. If you are filming with a DSLR like a cannon 80D, or a cheap Sony Handycam, the audio input will only record direct from the source and I would say yes, you would be better off with a recorder. You could try cleaning it up with audio software in editing but you can only fix so much..

Only 10hr battery time and 32gb max SD card limit.
I've never been able to fill a card past 2GB during any gig. 32gb of audio is getting 20+ hours easily.

How do these work? Could I sing into it without being in studio conditions?

I got lecture recordings and 32gb get filled easily on highest quality audio format. But again YMMV

So I'm curious. How does this compare to smartphone built in mics? Both budget and expensive. if a person had a iphone 12, galaxy 21, or galaxy z fold 2, would the recording quality be better or worse?

I have this and the TASCAM DR-05X.
Both are about the same price and does the same thing.

having both, I fell the TASCAM is a better product.
- seems alittle more sturdy well built
- more features. (though not as intuitive to use)
- bigger but by not much.
-- the Tascam recording seems to have less his and more "warmer" IMHO better quality.

FYI I'm just a regular joe smo that like to play with electronics. not a advance audio or video guy.

For folks not in to highest quality audio but want something much more convenient, look at the Sony ICD 570 voice/music recorder. So darn convenient. Under 50g, build in usb, takes micro SD.

The convenience factor was so big

Its all about the preamps and the ability of the device to clean up that sound. Smart phones do not have preamps. Your smartphone will take whatever signal it gets and record it.. think of it as raw.. you can however take that raw file and clean it up in editing. But if there is too much background noise and you are looking for perfection. You will distort the audio you want to keep way before you get rid of the parts you dont want

You want the best mic for the type of audio you are trying to capture.. audio from 1 subject without background noise? A shotgun mic directly focused on your subject. The better the mic, the less background noise, the easier it is to clean. But you also need to know how to use that mic and how close to the subject you need to be.. next would be a good quality recorder to clean up that signal even further. Going even further for people that want to record music and get rid of echos, you need a sound booth or be outside where its completely silent (which is almost impossible) have you ever been in an empty room and talked compared to a room filled with furniture? Less echo.. a sound booth is taking fibers that absorb the sound and covering every part of the room so there is no way for them to bounce back.. the final result still may not be perfect but you can use software to get rid of the remaining background noise without distorting the audio you want.. this is the simplest way to put it. There are different types of mics for different circumstances, boom poles and lav mics for video, preamp devices with separate recorders for the best quality possible.. Now this is all if you want perfection.. if you are looking to just make youtube videos, you can get away with a lot less stuff.
