The Gen 2 is a PID controller which is supposed to tighten up your temperature variance. I'm a complete rookie at BBQing so I don't know if it matters a whole lot. I've seen some pretty delicious looking food come out of a Gen 1 grill so I wouldn't call it a dealbreaker.

I'm still mulling over whether to pickup the DLX w/ Gen 2 controller, or S&G with Gen 1.

This is a good deal on a good pellet grill. I researched these to death before pulling the trigger on this model last summer. I chose this model over the DLX because I wanted the S&G feature and felt it outweighed the Gen 2 controller. I was also a rookie to smoking meats and I haven't been disappointed yet.

Yes, you can purchase the Gen 2 controller directly from Camp Chef or Sportsman's Warehouse, but it has a hefty price of $200. Having said that, I recently did just that and I can say that it holds the temperature setting with much less swing than the original.

Yea, I had a similar decision but went with the DLX and kept my charbroil tru-infrared for searing and grilling.

LOVE this smoker. I bought the one with the Non-WIFI Gen 2 controller during the BF deal, and use it virtually every weekend since.

I have since done a couple of upgrades, including the WIFI controller, Sear box, jerky tray and rib rack accessories, etc.

If anybody has any questions, i'd be glad to help.

You're very welcome. A couple of other tips for this smoker are that if you plan on using it in colder temperatures you'll may want to consider a blanket and using smoker gasket felt to create a better seal where the lid and smoke stack meet the grill/smoker body. It'll still pour smoke from other areas, but it runs a bit better after sealing those.
