Agree with this comment on fit - It's the best fitting outdoor clothing brand I've found. I hate to do it, but I've come to a point where I will pay for clothing that actually fits me right. 6'4" 200lb with big shoulders.

All the other outdoor brands are way too baggy in the waist and tight in the shoulders/arms for me.
glad you agree - do you know of any other brands that fit like ARC [ like more trim ] ? i havent come across much.

my mountainhardware and marmot pieces are also fairly loose on me.

This beta sl hybrid fits pretty loose (it's made to layer) compared to say a gamma or atom.
If you want a shell the beta AR would be the way to go if you dont mind spending the dough.

The sl hybrid is a glorified windbreaker with some pricey embroidery. Around $100 would be a good price

Thanks for the tip. Just ordered a Atom LT for the wife, I have one and it's been my favorite single piece of clothing since I bought it 4 years ago.

personally would go for the Beta AR as a shell, got mine for $350 or around that. I think $200-50 would be better for the SL hybrid. though I still would go for the AR

Really depends on a person's use. I prefer the packability of the SL.

There really isnt a big difference between the pack size of an AR & SL. Unless you drink the koolaide

What does it have to do with drinking the Kool-Aid? Ounces are ounces. I think it's around 4 oz between the Hybrid SL and the AR. I have the non-Hybrid SL version and I think that's another 2 oz less than the hybrid version.

IMO
In what world does 4 ounces really make a difference?
The thinner the material the less durable it is . Arcteryx considers the SL Hybrid an emergency jacket . Which I take as, it wont hold up to regular use.
$300 for an emergency jacket thats thinner then a contractor garbage bag ???

The whole minamilist, layering world that Arcteryx created is the Koolaide I'm referring to. I do like their products but half of them are really unnecessary....

Its both our own money and if the 4 oz savings doesn't make a difference to you you're free to choose how you spend your money and I'm free to choose how to spend mine.

If I need a heavier weight waterproof shell, I've got another one for that purpose. That one doesn't stuff down to the size of my Beta SL, but it also has other features like pit zips, a rollable hood, napoleon pocket, outside access to an inner jacket, etc. My Beta SL is a little bit bigger than a can of soda rolled down and my other, heavier, waterproof shell rolls down to probably a Nalgene size bottle.

When I (used to) travel, I usually don't check a bag, and I usually bring my Beta SL if there is a chance of rain in the forecast, because it packs down small and light.

I agree that Arc'teryx has minimalist gear, but I don't agree they created the world of layering and the need for lighter-weight options. Many other brands also have lightweight options.

ive never had stuff need repair - my BETA AR is still in decent shape after using it regularly for 6 or 7 years now, so i cant answer.

i have alot of patagonia as well, but i like their inner layers better than ARC, [better sweater, nano puff] - but i have ski pants with their own DWR and it's still pretty good.

i find that ARC's fit is more for the mountain athlete, or athletic people in general. patagonia tends to be loose on me for similar sizes.
Much appreciated. Thank you. I have a Patagonia Pow Slayer shell and ski pants (Gore-Tex) that I've put through the wringer and they're amazing after many seasons. And I agree their mid-layers are amazing. I re-do the DWR treatment a few times a season per their recommendations. I'm happy with their stuff but have friends who love Arc'teryx so never want to get completely locked into a brand and overlook other good options.

Does water get into though the front zipper on your Beta SL ??
IWhen I had a SL Hybrid it leaked when it got wet. Arcteryx told me that the main zipper isnt water proof. . LMAO

That's odd, I've never had that issue, and the companies that make storm flap less jackets like this usually use pretty watertight zippers since the jackets don't have storm flaps.

I have another storm flap less jacket from Outdoor Research and haven't had an issue with that one either.
