How to update firmware for anyone who doesn't want to spend 15 mins researching (windows 10):

Download below
Newest 1.35 firmware .BIN download - https://www.rdforum.org/threads/108504/
Uniden R Series SW Download Tool (R7_20201013.zip file) Install the program, disregard the old firmware - https://www.uniden.info/download/index.cfm?s=R7
USB to UART Bridge Driver (if needed) https://www.silabs.com/developers...cp-drivers

Plug in the usb cable to your windows 10 pc. It should chime that a device was connected. Windows likely wont have a usb driver. Under "Device Manager" in windows, There will be a device called USB to UART Bridge and will likely be open with an icon stating no driver is installed. Update the driver by pointing it to the unzipped driver folder and it should install. Next run the program,it should automatically read the firmware (mine was 1.33). Click open under download file and point it to the 1.35 bin file and click start download at the bottom.
This is no easier or difficult to use than the R3. Both are excellent detectors, but the big difference is this R7 has the arrows. They aren't meant to be plug-and-play, so do yourself a favor and head over to Vortex Radar and read up on his configuration page to better understand all the settings.

That's because patent for arrows expired.

I finally pulled the trigger. I've been dreading installing this in my Tesla Model 3. Any pro tips?
Add a fuse to your fuse box or splice into your rear view mirror. If you don't like the look of the suction cups, research blend mounts.

Best bang for the buck radar detector. A speeding ticket/lawyer will cost more than this.
Used to run Valentine1 in both my cars for almost 20 years and was underwhelmed with the V1 Gen2. Now been running the R7 (with Waze) and this has a lot more features built in. Range is also superb, better than the Gen1. The new update with auto lockouts is great so far (not perfect), very promising.

Only 2 complaints I have is the suction cup mount design is not the best, and the ramp up detection is a little spiky. Can always install a blendmount to handle the mount issue.

I found dealing with Bestbuy price match with this was best, to take advantage of any AMEX offers on top. I was able to get an additional $25 off $300 purchase when that deal was active.

I'm coming from an og redline that was the benchmark. But the r3 is better so the r7 you get arrows. If you live somewhere that you need to be in stealth mode from detector detectors don't get this one

Nothing different about installing it on model 3. Except I had to put soft felt at the back top of the detector because it would hit the windshield when driving over bumpy roads. More of a nuisance.

I'm a rookie when it comes to radar detectors... this will be my first one. Is this good for beginners or would you rather recommend the R3?
The fark are you talking about "beginner" radar detector.

This isn't a skill or hobby. Get the best you can afford.

This will be my third r7 (for 3 cars) to replace 3 v1. This radar is amazing especially with the new 1.35 firmware with auto lockout that you can find on rdforum iirc. Enable that with mrcd and it will reduce a bunch of blind spot falses.

I've used v1 for >20 years and am die hard v1, but with recent deals I had to check this out and love it now. Got one for 360, 370 and now 380

Hard disagree on the best bang for the buck. Uniden R3 is $250 and has basically the same performance. This is more than 50% extra for rear arrows and auto lockouts which are nice to have for direction awareness and less work to filter out falses, but, in the end, R3 will protect you as well as R7.
