I wonder why Newegg has it cheaper on ebay than its own website. I'd think you'd profit more by selling on your own website.

This device can't max out a 1gbe connection with standard drive setup. Some of the services it can run need multiple uplinks. Great for redundancy as well in small-medium businesses. This does have expansion port you can add 10gbe to if needed.

You'd think. Then again, Newegg isn't exactly known for its excellent customer service (although it's quite well known for its atrocious customer service), so having eBay and PayPal pick up the slack for them probably provides operational advantages. It's certainly not a good sign from a business perspective in my opinion.

I personally boycotted Newegg's website after they let my account of 15 years get hacked and, upon my bringing it to their attention, proceeded to nuke it and pretend I never existed. I've only purchased one thing from their company since, and it was only because eBay facilitated the transaction.

This holds 6 drives vs 5 on the 1520+, comes with less ram, but has higher maximum. Processor is more business oriented on the 1621. 1520 will be plenty for home use, and use less power.

Which model? I don't work for or make money off Synology, but it's the only one I have experience in. Synology is the standard for cheap small-medium business on site storage solution.

I just bought one of these from Amazon a couple of weeks ago and I am extremely pleased with the purchase. If I had known all the things you could do with the NAS I would have gotten rid of my power hungry home server years ago.

I am certainly no expert, but one reason to have multiple ethernet ports would be if you wanted to use iSCSI, which needs a specific IP address from the NAS to present to your target machine. iSCSI uses 'block' storage so it is similar to having a remote hard drive/data pool versus folder shares.

I was strongly considering the 1520+, but went with the 1621+ instead. I don't really like buying from NewEgg and or eBay, but $40 is $40.

Some stats I was comparing:

Ds1520+ has intel processor and only 1 memory slot - the other memory is soldered to the board. Ds1621+ has AMD processor and 2 memory slots.

This thread talks about the differences: https://www.reddit.com/r/synology...ns_of_cpu/

This thread talks about things people wish they know about synology in general before purchasing a product: https://www.reddit.com/r/synology..._that_you/

Personally, I always think it's better to buy more than you need as you'll eventually grow into it. If you have a lot of data and plan acquiring more data, get the ds1621+.

Link aggregation, failover in an environment with multiple switches, VLAN segregation, etc. It can be useful to designate interfaces to specific ports as well. There are lots of reasons.

OPTIONS starting with the lowest cost. It probably has a PCIe slot for a 10Gb module.

Cost, and that a 10g port provides no benefit if the array can't keep up with the port

Which 32GB ECC RAM would you recommend to upgrade the DS1621+?
