I bought the Mac mini m1 deal from Costco a few weeks ago. This is my first Mac in a while, and I must say I'm underwhelmed, and it has same specs as this MacBook. I can't comment on benchmarks in key apps, but i experience general performance issues and bugginess. I mainly bought this to organize all my photos in the photos app, and I get all types of random crashes, spinning wheel of death. Apple support has been terrible honestly, I reached out twice for problems relating to this, and both times the answer is "reinstall the os". I mean zero troubleshooting done just told to reinstall the os. Sorry for the rant, I just expected a solid experience and it's been bumpy. Thankfully Costco has a 90 day return policy so really trying to give this a chance.

Depends on the software you use, M1 has a bit of compatibility issues with older software because the new non-Intel chip.

this laptop has been praised even by Youtube reviewers who are anti-apple

I would go and return and get another. If its the same issue then maybe it is the task you are doing. If you are using all Apple software its a bad sign but if its third party stuff it could be its not optimized yet.

I won't argue with you, I have love hate with it already, I thought it was a much more full featured app, but that's the main reason I am using this Mac. Recommendations otherwise? I am basically trying to get off Google photos, and use a non cloud program to manage my photo library

8gb of ram on a mac is not equivalent to 8gb of ram on a pc. Im still using a 9 year old mac air with 4gb of ram. Its not lightning fast, but its still fine.
Just for comparison, with the education discount on Apple- which anyone can use without needing proof, is $1,199. You save $50 with Costco. Costco gives you extra warranty but, at least for me, I get 12 months no interest and 3% cash back with my Apple Card.
I bought the MBA M1 around November, recently did a thermal mod which boost it performance almost as good as the pro version. (and it fan-less) highly recommended the mod. ($15 thermal pads get the job done)

I settled on Onedrive. It's multiplatform, yes it's technically cloud but it exists as a regular folder on any device you're syncing it on without restricting your ability to manipulate the files, and it supports automatically uploading everything from your camera.

costco has a 90 day return policy compared to 14 with apple. that'll come in clutch just in case apple announces new 14/16 inch versions soon.
