The smaller Walmart Neighborhood stores count as grocery stores. The large Big Box stores do not.
www.doctorofcredit.com has all the faqs:

1. Cap1 allows only 2 personal cards & 2 business cards (but a few have extra grandfathered in) & co-branded cards do not count

2. Cap1 pulls from ALL 3 bureaus at each time for each application (3 pulls per application & averages them out!)

3. need at least 720-740+ mininum FICO according to data points from last several years (but other factors such as too high balances or too many inquiries in past year can cause rejection).. do not know of this year's mininum
so if you are APPROVED; please list your FICO score that got approved
&
how many new cards you got in the past 2 years because there is rumor that Savor cards have a 5/24 rule similar to Chase (ie; must be under 5 new credit card accounts in past 24 months)
Signed up previously with the $250 offer and was instantly approved. After receiving the card and using it for a week, they restricted my card because they had to verify my income. I had to e-sign an IRS form 4506-T for them to check my 2019 tax Return. After that, it took two weeks for them to verify and remove the restriction. They seem so strict compared to other credit card companies @.@

I called the customer service and the rep told me over the phone.
So you applied, were approved, got the email that I got that said you qualify for the $200 bonus, but with the footnote saying you might not if you're an existing customer, called them to find out, and they said no, you don't qualify after all?

Or did you not get the same email that said you qualify for the $200 but might not if you're an existing customer?

If it's the former, and you had to call to find out, that's kind of deceptive even if they do include disqualifying language, since they don't make it clear which one it is, and you could end up spending more than you would otherwise have, to get the $200, only to not get it.

I didn't get the same email! Got approved for the card and upon calling was told I don't qualify for the bonus since I have another credit card with them.

In your case I think you should be good to receive the bonus

Sorry about that. When you applied, did you make sure to click on a button or link that specifically mentioned this promo? They say that unless you do, you can't get it. In any case I'm going to tempt fate and call them to confirm that I qualify for this promo. I also need to ask them about closing my other card with them that I've had for over 20 years, or at least if they're willing to do away with its monthly $5 fee. I'm a bit leery of closing it since it's supposedly bad for one's credit.

CaptialOne has Worst customer service. You can not reach the customer service within one hour.

I disagree, they've always said they will answer (American csr) and were always helpful, until they closed their card on me for not using it. I only used it for foreign travel about 3x per year on foreign trips.

My account is checking , they hold my first two checks and locked service and let me call them.

Called twice and waiting totally more than one hour, resolved in second time.

Is there any downside to opening an account and then closing it afterwards just for the bonus?

Instead of closing it, just stop using it.

For previous accountholders

"How does my spend bonus work?

You will earn a $200 bonus if you spend at least $500 within 3 months of your rewards membership enrollment date. Once you qualify for this bonus, we will apply it to your rewards balance within two billing cycles. Existing or previous Accountholders may not be eligible for this one-time bonus."

I have 2 cards from them including Walmart card. They are really conservative so buyer beware!

You can still check to see if you prequalify

Yes they do have a limit it is 2 cards, but you can change or upgrade downgrade a card to another perks card so example you can take a Quicksil er card and turn it Into a Savor card.

Not sure if this was for me, but it won't hurt your credit to stop using it. It will hurt your credit to close it.

And that's the thing. I just spoke to a CS rep who checked and said that I qualify for this offer, but she didn't sound very knowledgeable and was just reading the above off her screen, and didn't mention the last sentence about existing or previous account holders.

I worry that after spending $500, I won't get the $200, and if I call CS to inquire, they'll mention this caveat, and if I complain, they'll say the obligatory we're so sorry for this confusion but it's clearly there in the terms. Of course the key words are "may not be", not "are not", with no indication of how this is determined.

I smell a potential semi-scam, precisely because of this weasel word wording.

So, to existing or previous Cap1 account holders who applied for and were approved for this card with this offer, then spent $500 or more within 3 months, did you get the $200?

Will it hurt my credit to close my older Cap1 Platinum account with the $0 balance and $5/mo fee, if I just applied and was approved for the Savor card, with a credit limit several thousand higher than the one on my older card? I'd like to save the $60 a year for a card I no longer need or intend to use.
